Remember that I mentioned one of my FFN readers thought I should combine "Kingly Gifts" and "Waking Day"?

Here it is:
A reviewer at FFN, KathyG helped me to fuse these two stories taking place within the period from three days after the Ring was destroyed to the end of the day that the Ringbearers awakened. The first story was "Kingly Gifts" originally written in 2004 for Marigold's Challenge #6; the title was Marigold's prompt element for the story. The other story was "Waking Day", which was written for Shirebound in the 2013 LOTR GFIC Yule Fic Exchange, which overlapped the previous story and filled in some gaps that I missed in the first story. Finally, the drabble was "Before the Feast" written in 2011 for Back-to-Middle-earth-Month. I also added a small amount of new material, and made some minor edits. Thank you so much, KathyG for encouraging me to do this, creating a single cohesive narrative from these stories.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. First: A work-in-progress fic
Eleventy-one: Too Short a Time, Book One
This is my biography of Bilbo Baggins, beginning with his birth. It's still a WIP, and young Bilbo has finally come of age. The first part is to take him right up to the day Gandalf shows up at Bag End. Part Two will take up on his arrival home. I am also posting it at FFN,, Many Paths to Tread and AO3, though not all the chapters so far are up yet at the latter.

Second: Another Work-in-Progress fic, which I am co-writing with pandemonium_213
The Prisoner and the Hobbit is an AU in which Sauron ends up a prisoner in Mandos, rather than being destroyed by the destruction of the Ring. Bilbo Baggins is in Tol Eressea, and at Gandalf's urging he and Sauron become correspondents. It sounds sort of silly and crack-y, but it's not. There are a lot of references to both our separate universes, but you don't have to have read them to understand the story. It's a lot of fun to work on, as each of us has to wait for the other person to answer the previous letter in order to move forward. We really don't know ahead of time what will happen! The story can also be found at The Silmarillion Writer's Guild.

Third: Here is a bit of my art. I don't have a lot of it, but this one was a lot of fun to make.

The October Challenge stories are up!

Some of you might have spotted mine briefly the other evening, when I accidentally posted it here (I was working on the formatting and meant to post privately) so if you wondered where it vanished to, here it is!

I have two goals:

1. Begin more regular updates on my WIPs.
2. Finish Book One of "Eleventy-One" by the end of summer.
dreamflower: gandalf at bag end (Default)
Due to various happenings in RL, I did not get the chance to finish and post this on my actual birthday, so consider it a belated birthday mathom to all my friends!

Rating: G
Summary: Bilbo and Frodo celebrate one of their birthdays in the West.
Author's Notes: There are a lot of references in here to my story "Ancestress", as well as to my story with [livejournal.com profile] pandemonium_213, "The Prisoner and the Hobbit"! You don't need to have read it to understand this story, but it might be more fun to spot some of the references. (BTW, Pande, I borrowed another of your characters! *grin*).

My plan for today was to work on my WIPs, but a thunderstorm made it necessary to turn off the computer, so I sat down with a pen and notebook, with every intent of finishing up my challenge story for this month.

Instead, this little one-shot came to me out of nowhere:

I posted this over at [livejournal.com profile] hobbit_holidays.

It's been a long time since I wrote a story that was not either a WIP or an exchange story or a challenge story. But this one came to me tonight after the Children's Pageant at church, and I came home and just wrote it all up at once. And though it's been a very long time, I thought this was a good place for it.

Rating: G, but a little angsty
Summary: It's the Year of the Troubles, and the Year is Turning but the Troubles aren't over yet. Pippin's sister Pimpernel ponders what the New Year might bring. Will her brother ever come home?

I need a title for a person in a story I am working on, a crossover set in the late 1940s. I need a British character to have a minor title; it needs to be something sort of ancient and that would draw respect, but also not to be so high up that the person would get a lot of attention-- he'd be able to mostly maintain a low profile outside his home community, so I don't want him to be a Duke or anything like that.

So what kind of title would be suitable, and what would be the correct form of address for it? It does not actually need to be attached to a real place, as I will be inventing that.

I recently posted a Yule exchange fic that I did as a late pinch-hit for Linaewen. She had requested a story about one of Boromir's adventures on the way to Imladris...

Fixing to head off to church, but before I go, here's a question: I KNOW that somewhere in FotR, Boromir explains what happened to his horse on the way to Rivendell, but for some reason I simply can NOT find the passage this morning. Can someone point me to it?

A couple of ficlets:

Format: Ficlet
Title: Hope Is a Waking Dream
Genre: Crossover
Rating: G
Warnings: N /A
Characters: Fatty Bolger, Lórien, the Man-in-the-Moon
Pairings: N/A
Author's Notes: This is a crossover, LotR with Roverandom and The Silmarillion. I like to think that one way in which the Powers could help the peoples of Middle-earth was through the gift of rest and hope. And as for the Man-in-the-Moon, his realm (in my mind) encompasses and exceeds Arda, though his charges are any children who can see the Moon from whatever universe they dwell. It seemed possible to me that he might collaborate with Lórien to provide a respite for a weary prisoner. The title is a quote from Aristotle.
Summary: In dreams may sometimes come rest and surcease from sorrow...

And finally, Sam writes a gardener's poem:

Format: Poetry
Title: Ode to Potatoes
Genre: Poetry, Parody
Rating: G

Characters: Sam Gamgee
Pairings: N/A
Author's Note: I've tried poems in Ogden Nash's style in the past—but this particular grouping of prompts woke up my Ogden Nash muse again. One of the hallmarks of Nash's humorous style are lines which are very mismatched in length and scansion. Also you will notice a famous line from movie-verse in this one.
Summary: Another poem in the style of Ogden Nash.

Ode to Potatoes

I've got several more in half-finished form-- perhaps I can work on those today!

Format: Dribble
Title: Storm Debris
Genre: Romance
Rating: G
Warnings: N /A
Characters: Imrazôr , Mithrellas
Pairings: Imrazor/Mithrellas
Author's Notes: I borrowed the term "Ossë's wrath" from [livejournal.com profile] surgicalsteel. In Unfinished Tales we are told that it was in just such a storm that Amroth's ship was swept from shore. Nimrodel's party was lost in the mountains at the time. I am imagining here that Mithrellas is found unconscious afterwards, alone and separated from the rest of the party, as Imrazôr and his people are surveying the storm damage.

Title: Gone is Gone (the Hobbit Version)
Genre: Folk tale
Rating: G
Warnings: N /A
Characters: Rose Gamgee, the younger Gamgee children
Pairings: OMC/OFC
Author's Notes: This Middle-earth adaptation is based on "Gone is Gone", a translation of a Bohemian folk tale by Wanda Hazel Gág. It is in the third volume of the 1954 edition of Childcraft. Those orange-backed books were a main source of my early childhood reading, and I still own them, worn as they are. This particular tale was definitely a favorite of mine and always makes me giggle hysterically.
