dreamflower: gandalf at bag end (bag end 2 by <lj user="danae_b">)
It has been very moving to see the outpouring of caring from so many people about the loss of one of the fandom's well-known writers. Many of the condolences came from people who have never read his work, but only know of what others said to him.

If anyone would like to read his work who never has before, you could do worse than start with his "Elf Academy" series:

Elf Academy
"Desperate for employment, six Elves who never left Middle-earth, decide to apply for the one position that is ready-made for them — being Elves. There’s just one catch. A Yule giftfic for all my friends. Rating is for adult themes involving college life. Nai Eru lyë mánata [May Eru bless you]. MEFA 2010: First Place: Modern Times: General."
Elf Academy Part Deux
Christmas at Edhellond: Elf Academy
Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within (This story is not all posted, but was complete; his betas are seeing to it that rest of it gets posted.)

Many of his other stories concern the Valar, and the Elves of the First and Second Age. If you also like that sort of thing, or would like to explore it for the first time, here is a link to his author page at Stories of Arda.

Some of you may recall that a few years back, [livejournal.com profile] mariole posted a wonderful story called Bad Step. If you haven't read it, and you are at all a fan of Sam h/c, it's a story in which Sam is seriously injured in an accident, pre-Quest, and must convalesce at Bag End.

Well, another friend of mine, [livejournal.com profile] kgreen20 has (with Mariole's permission) written a sweet little gapfiller for the story in which Merry and Pippin pay a visit to the recovering Sam! It's called, appropriately enough, Merry and Pippin's Visit

My friend [livejournal.com profile] kgreen20 has posted her very first LOTR fanfic on her LJ:

"Where's Frodo?" http://kgreen20.livejournal.com/642.html?view=386#t386

It's a little gapfiller set between TH:AUJ and FOTR, explaining a few inconsistencies some people have noticed in the two different scenes. I hope some of you will enjoy it and make her welcome!

A remarkable little friendship story, featuring a conversation between Bilbo and Elrond after the Ring went South:

My friend [livejournal.com profile] danae_b is dipping her toes into Who-fic! She's writing as [livejournal.com profile] theotherbadwolf, and has a new ficlet posted here. Very lovely bit of post-Pond angst, written with Dana's usual tight POV!

Many people on my flist are also friends with [livejournal.com profile] gayalondiel, and may remember that years ago she was writing a crossover between LotR and Stargate-1. But she took a hiatus from it, and then The Last Ship, where she was archiving it, was taken down.

Well, now she has begun the process of revising it and re-posting it at AO3! The first chapter's up: For Those That See.

I'm so excited!

I would love to rec a delightful fic I've been reading today. Voices at the Door by [livejournal.com profile] rhymer23. It's a beautiful series of vignettes about the friendship between Bilbo and Aragorn, how they met and how their friendship developed over the years that Bilbo dwelt in Rivendell.

The author is fairly new to writing LotR fanfic, but her story is filled with rich and vivid descriptions and the characterizations of both Bilbo and Aragorn are spot on. You can see why they are drawn together, the hobbit in exile from his own people and the lonely king in exile whose wanderings are given a new purpose when he can describe them to another kindred soul. It's not a long story--only 14 short chapters!

Please do read this story if you are at all fond of Aragorn and/or Bilbo, and let the author know if you enjoy it half as much as I have been!

[livejournal.com profile] claudia603 wrote me the cutest bit of comment fic here!

Just adorable--Bilbo encountering Bofur BEFORE the Unexpected Party!

While I am quite sure that most of the folks on my flist have probably read this one, since it was posted in 2006, I just finished it for the first time, and am just blown away by it!

It's by [livejournal.com profile] mariole, and it's called By Life or Death. It's an AU in which Strider and the hobbits encounter a LIVE troll right after they found the petrified ones.

An epic battle with the monster and some brilliant h/c, especially for Aragorn and Frodo (though others come in for their share as well), some wonderful angst, lots of love, loyalty and friendship and terrific characterizations of all five heroes (I'm blown away by her Aragorn, as I don't think I'd ever seen her write him before; I'm used to her wonderful hobbits)--well, I'm still a little breathless.

So, maybe if you are new you haven't read this; if it sounds like it might appeal, I highly recommend it! And perhaps if you vaguely remember it from the past, you might want to renew your acquaintance with it--it is certainly worth a re-read!

My paid LJ is up today, and payday's not till tomorrow. Oh well. I can make do with the free until then. But gee, it's not very pretty.

The week's nearly at an end, and I still have several incomplete B2MEM bits on my hard drive! I must try really hard to get a few more finished and posted!

And I just realized I only have one sentence written for my GFIC challenge story. Yeesh!!!

Oh--[livejournal.com profile] browngirl, AKA [livejournal.com profile] rubynye has written a lovely little gen fic about the Fell Winter over here: at The Hobbit kink meme, in which Bilbo tells Bofur about the Fell Winter! It's really nice; check it out!

And completely on another subject that's a little TMI of the feminine sort, I need some advice...Read more... )

Well, everyone, dinner with the pastor and her husband was a roaring success! The DH and I did a lot of cleaning yesterday, and he did a lot of yardwork, so today all we had to do was a last minute dusting and running of the sweeper, and pick up a few groceries. We did the latter errand while we were out picking up my paycheck this morning.

A while back, [livejournal.com profile] azalaisdep wrote a little drabble in [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly; I commented with the notion that Bilbo's version of the "Tra-la-la-lally" song in TH was because he did not speak or understand any Elven languages at the time, so he simply made up words to suit what he thought he heard. (That's been my own "headcanon" for a long time!)

My comment gave her a bunny, and now she's written a lovely little ficlet about it:

Lost in Translation

It's quite fun, and very much the sort of thing I had imagined!

OK,everybody, I have never even seen one episode of "Supernatural", but [livejournal.com profile] ramblin_rosie has written a hilarious crossover: movie-verse LotR/Supernatural. In it are some very funny tributes to some real-life LotR fanfic! (I'm looking at you, [livejournal.com profile] surgicalsteel and [livejournal.com profile] grey_wonderer as well as some other people on my flist, not to mention a flying tribute to one of my DH's favorite bunnies...

Somehow, Sam and Dean end up following Aragorn from the Paths of the Dead to the Pelennor: Red Falls the Dew in the Rammas Echor

[livejournal.com profile] pandemonium_213 has posted a lovely seasonal story over at Many Paths to Tread, and it's HOBBITS! Specifically, Merry and Pippin, who meet a certain Elf in Rivendell just before the Quest. The three of them talk of their various holiday traditions: It's Inner Light.
