Well, a lot of people on my flist have been doing this, so of course, I have to do it, too!
[livejournal.com profile] baranduin added a question, so I will too!

1. Do you live a house, a condo, or some kind of apartment?
House

2. Do you rent or own?
Own

3. What’s one thing that you would change about it if you could?
Add a little more square footage to each room, a second bathroom, and remodel the kitchen. Only the last one may happen one day, unless we either win Publisher's Clearing House or the lottery.

4. Would you like to move?
NO! Moving is a lot of hard work, stressful and painful and things get broken or lost. Besides we are finally getting to get the garden the way we want it, and you can't move gardens.

5. Do you read the answers of others before answering yourself?
Yes, most of the time.

This question was added by [livejournal.com profile] baranduin
6. How do you eat Oreos?
Fill a glass with ice cold milk. Crush 2 or 3 Double Stuffed Oreos into it. When they have mostly sunk to the bottom, fish them out with an ice tea spoon and enjoy! (Regular Oreos work too, but I like the double stuffed best.)

And here is MY question:
7: What household chore do you actually enjoy doing?
Folding laundry. There is something soothing in reducing a pile of assorted items into orderly squares and rectangles and rolls that will fit nicely into drawers and cupboards. I am very particular about the way certain things are folded; it's the one chore my DH doesn't do (except in an emergency) because he knows I will re-do it. Since I've been sick, he's caught up all the dirty laundry, but now I have a pile of clean I haven't been able to finish yet. Maybe tomorrow. I love folding napkins...and rolling up washcloths...and using that new method of folding T-shirts so they will stand up in the drawer...

2 things I wish I could do, one unselfish, one selfish:

1. Be dictator of the world for one week, after which I could vanish into obscurity but none of the things I would do could be undone. I'd spend the week ending wars, correcting injustice, and making arrangements to end poverty and disease. I'd get the advice of people I respected, to make sure there were no unnecessary side-effect of my meddling. (If I'm going to fantasize here, let's make it good.)

2. Win enough money so I could rent a resort in New Zealand and bring in all my LJ friends for a huge moot! All expenses paid in full for everyone. And I'd have enough to bring in our favorite LotR/TH celebrities for personal appearances! And when it was over, I'd still have some left, enough to retire on! (Probably have to be Publisher's Clearing House. I always forget to buy lottery tickets, LOL!)

One more day to go!

4 memories

These are the first things that popped into my head at the prompt.

1. Being in Hurricane Katrina.

2. My husband proposing to me as he was driving me home in the fog.

3. The first time I finished reading The Lord of the Rings. I cried. I had never cried at a book before. I was fifteen.

4. The assassination of President Kennedy.

5 things I can't live without.

OK, I'm not going to be literal and say "air, water, food, and shelter", as that would waste four of them. Everyone needs those to live. So I'll be more figurative.

1. Something to read, books, magazines, fanfic, e-books, the back of a cereal box, whatever.

2. Internet. It's my lifeline to the rest of the world.

3. Music to listen to. I'm not fond of total silence, but often I'd much rather listen to music than watch TV.

4. Something to do--hence my many hobbies. I loathe being bored, and like to keep my hands occupied, whether it's knitting or sewing or doodling or whatever.

5. Companionship, most especially that of my husband. I do value alone time, but I need to know there is someone there for me, as I am there for him, and that any aloneness is both temporary and voluntary.

6 songs:

Picking out certain songs is hard because I like so many, so I'm going to refer back to my first post and my random fact about earworms. I figure if a song is stuck in my head, that's sort of like addictive. Now not all the songs stuck there are ones I like. Some of them are commercial jingles or songs I really dislike. But in recent weeks each of these has been stuck in my head more than once, and I don't mind at all because I like them. So that's what I'm going to list.

1. Billy Boyd's The Last Goodbye. I cannot get enough of it, and listen to it over and over, so of course it stays in my mind. It breaks my heart in a good way. It mainly replays in my head at night when I am trying to go to sleep--just about every night since I saw the last movie.

2. Into the West from ROTK is a very close second. I randomly came across it again at YouTube while looking for something different, and couldn't resist clicking. So it stayed in my head for a few days.

3. Great is Thy Faithfulness--stuck in my head after singing it in church. It's one of my very favorite hymns, and it was the school hymn where I went to college. I really like this version; I love "one person doing all the parts" a capella anyway.

4. Be Still My Soul--also stayed in my head after church one Sunday. And this version of it is gorgeous.

5. The Water is Wide--a folk song. The Grey Havens scene always puts me in mind of this song, and oddly enough, so does listening to my Silmarillion audiobook for some reason. This is my favorite rendition.

6. Happy--because of frequent exposure, because often that's why I get an earworm. I hear someone using that song for one reason or another nearly every day it seems, and unlike most overexposed songs, I haven't gotten tired of it yet. I suppose because, really, it's so...happy! 8^D (Though it's not to say if it keeps up, I may get tired of it yet.)

There were several recent earworms that did NOT make the cut: The theme song from "Wyatt Earp" (the old TV series); "Party Go On" (Party City commercial), "Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz" (old Pepto-Bismol commercial) and some songs that I liked at first, but overexposure has made me tired of them, like "Roar" and "Let it Go".

7 phobias/fears:

1. Snakes. I've had this phobia since I was very small, as in pre-school age. It's not so bad as it once was, but it's still there. I used to freak even seeing one in a picture or on TV--now I just shudder and avert my eyes. But if I see a real live one in RL, I still go berserk.

2. I also have a fear of saying "goodbye" to someone who's going somewhere without also telling them to "be careful" or "be safe". This always goes for family members and loved ones, but sometimes even for relative strangers--if the weather's bad, I will always tell my customers to "Please drive safely!" I guess I'm afraid something will happen to them if I don't.

3. Cockroaches. This goes back to my college days when my dorm room was infested for a whole semester. I am not only afraid one will get on me, but they squick me as well, with all those gross skittering sounds they make.

4. Rats and mice indoors. They don't much bother me if they are running around outside, (mice are kind of cute running around in the grass) but inside the house they freak me out.

5. There are some things I am afraid of in dreams, but not awake: sometimes I will dream that someone I know--often, but not always, a family member--is an evil imposter who has replaced them. Sometimes I will dream that I am suddenly falling from a high place. Another is that I am walking or driving along an endless road or bridge, only to find it stop abruptly in mid-air leaving me nowhere to go. These things never bother me when I am awake.

6. I used to fear atomic annihilation enough to keep me awake at night, not so much anymore. Probably a common fear for the "duck and cover" generation.

7. Being alone and homeless when I get old.

8 things that annoy:

1. Political blowhards on TV. I give myself permission to be as rude and as loud as I like to the TV set. If I ever meet them in person I hope I can be more rational, but still let them know what I think of their bloviating.
2. TV commercials that try to convince people they will save money by spending it, and other absurdities.
3. Tailgaters, people who pass when I'm going the speed limit, people who cut in front of me and other sorts of road hogs.
4. People with no patience, who think they are too special to wait their turn.
5. Bad customer service.
6. People who are always on their phones in public, broadcasting their personal business to the world at large, and who can't turn them off and make eye contact when they should be talking to someone in person.
7. Telemarketers. And creditors who will call when you aren't even late about your bill. Also who charge you to pay them. (A fee if you pay online; another fee if you pay by phone! And then if you end up mailing it to avoid the fee, a late fee.)
8. Wind. The kind that leaves your hair standing on end, and rips the car door out of your hand.
9. Itching

Taken from several people on my flist:

Name five ‘non-sexual kinks’ you have as a reader/writer: that is, five writing techniques, themes, settings, or character types that really draw you into a story. (If they are different for you as a reader than as a writer, please name both!)

1. I will call this one "turnabout". In every fandom there seems to be a character who gets the lion's share of attention (especially in hurt/comfort). In hobbit-fic, this character is almost always Frodo. I'm a sucker for fics in which that's turned around, and Frodo gets the chance to take care of someone for a change. And in any fandom, I enjoy it when the designated "caregiver" character gets the chance to be the "care-receiver" for once.

2. "Fluff with a bite". Drabbles are really good for this, but I've seen it in longer stories as well: sweet, light, inconsequential domesticity, with a sentence or two dropped in near the end to remind the reader that this won't last--something's happened/will happen to break your heart and spoil it all.

3. Opposite of the above: "Angst plus fluff", in which a sad, seemingly desperate situation is ameliorated by happy moments that remind the reader "this too will pass, and hope will endure as long as love does."

4. One theme I love is the triumph of compassion, in which things like mercy and forgiveness win the day; or in which the lack of these qualities cause the downfall of the villain(s). I suppose that is why LotR remains forever at the top of my favorite stories.

5. Friendship. Deep and loyal friendships that motivate the characters to help and to care for one another. I really love to read (and write) about how these friendships were formed and cemented.

I like to write about all these things, and even more to read about them.

You Are Helpful

Of all the types, you love social media the most. You love to interact with people and make new friends.
You are semi-addicted to social media, but you're not a narcassist. If anything, you like replying to people more than posting.

You are always eager to help out anyone who needs it or to simply respond with a supportive comment. You are a good friend - both online and offline.
You believe that people should be better to each other, especially on social media. And you're willing to spearhead that trend.

Day 10

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

1. I would absolutely love it if someone could make me a "Young Bilbo" icon and banner, showing him as a child or young adolescent, to go with my story Eleventy-One. I totally lack any Photoshop skills, but I know there are a few pics on the web of Martin Freeman as a child or youth that could perhaps be utilized.

2. I'd love a nice plotty pre-quest genfic featuring Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin (and maybe Bilbo) having a gentle adventure in the Shire; a new one. I search for these, and I think I've read nearly all of them. They used to be more popular, but I've never lost my taste for them, and would adore to have some new ones!

3. For years I have hankered after a LotR vid set during the "Grey Havens" scene, made with the Celtic folk song, "The Water is Wide". I'd hope for something featuring all of the hobbits, not just Frodo and Sam. I think that song is just perfect for such a subject.
