This is something a little different than my usual post. [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen is on my friend's list, and yesterday she wrote a beautiful poem and posted it in her LJ. With her permission, I am linking to it for today's Lent post:

The Mathematics of Heaven and Hell

I thought it was a very profound statement of the difference between Good and Evil. If you like it, please let her know!

I am trying to revive the community, shire_kitchen. I started out today with a re-post of my B2MeM 2014 story "The Music of the Land".
I know that lotr_community has had several of the monthly challenges that featured recipe!fics, and I'd love it if you have any recipe!fics if you would post them there. Also you can post any food related topics that might relate to Middle-earth by some stretch of the imagination! That could include recipes you've made up, or links to historical facts about food. It could also include pictures of dishes you've made or even your kitchen garden if you have one!
If you have never been to the community (which would not be surprising since the last post was in 2011) you might want to check it out--we had an annual recipe!fic challenge from 2005 to 2010, and there are some great stories and recipes there.

I hope you will check out shire_kitchen and consider joining the comm!

Interesting article, link courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] fanthropology.

"Archontic". I like that word.

For those of you concerned about the Spamdex theft of FFN, I got permission from [livejournal.com profile] dawn_felagund to crosspost her post (on a Yahoo! email group) on the progress being made on getting the last of the mirror sites taken down:

Hi, everyone,

I have just heard back from Cloudflare with an abuse contact for the host of Talkfictions.com:

abuse AT quasinetworks DOT com

Replace the ats and dots ... you know the drill. :)

When contacting these folks, make sure that you identify that you are reporting copyright infringement of your content on a site that they are hosting, Talkfictions.com. I would suggest including a link to your profile on Talkfictions (copy it from Google if you are not comfortable visiting the site; please remember that multiple users have reported malware and viruses on this site) and a link to your profile on FanFiction.net and/or FictionPress.com.

I have just sent my email. If I hear anything back that is of interest to the group, I will of course report it right away.

Thank you, everyone, who is taking the time and effort to chip away at this site. We WILL get them gone! :)

Dawn and others have been working hard on this, and it looks like they are succeeding. If you wish to register a complaint, this is a safe way to do so. Apparently everyone's reports have managed to get all of the other sites down, so we just need to keep it up until this one goes too.

She would like to spread the word, so feel free to make your own crossposts with this information.

There's a collaboration post up at [livejournal.com profile] b2mem for anyone who'd like to work with others on a project to find people to sign up with them.

My comment is here: http://b2mem.livejournal.com/338683.html?thread=5446907#t5446907

[livejournal.com profile] ceshaunessy and I have found someone to help out with the music, but we'd really like to also find an artist--it could be traditional or digital or whatever!

Also, [livejournal.com profile] lotr_community is having a rec challenge for February. You can find it here--http://lotr-community.livejournal.com/366089.html

The challenge is to make three recs: a self-rec, a fic rec and an art rec!

And [livejournal.com profile] read_lotr_aloud is having the usual Special Reading on that date:

http://read-lotr-aloud.livejournal.com/63415.html

I know this is short notice, and that many of us are in full [livejournal.com profile] b2mem mode, but if you'd like to participate, it can just be a short reading of your favorite passage! And anyone can take part--you don't need an assignment or even to be a member!

Over at [livejournal.com profile] b2memsupport, [livejournal.com profile] zhie has declared Wednesday "Add-a-Prompt Day"!

So if you are participating in B2MeM, go over and add a new prompt! If you haven't taken part so far, know that you are given 15 farthings to spend on prompts and claims, just for attending the Faire! The market stalls can be found here. Just go to the appropriate venue and post your prompt!

Here's an extra challenge for my hobbit-friends: There aren't nearly enough prompts in The Shire! Even if you don't think you will have time to write anything yourself, go over and leave a bunny there! You can leave up to 15 prompts before you run out of Faire Farthings, and you can always earn more by reviewing any of the 2015 stories at [livejournal.com profile] b2mem: one comment=1 farthing!

The [livejournal.com profile] wipbigbang is looking for a new mod or mods. The post is here, if you are so inclined: http://wipbigbang.livejournal.com/24395.html

My plate's too full, but it would be neat if someone took it on. This was the challenge that enabled me to complete "Eleventy-One, Book One".

Did you know there is such a thing as International Fanworks Day?

I think that is so cool!

My friend [livejournal.com profile] dawn_felagund, whom some of you know as the founder of the Silmarillion Writer's Guild, and as the website developer and co-mod for Many Paths to Tread, gave a talk this past weekend at Mythmoot.

You can watch a clip of her giving a talk here at her LJ! It's really fascinating. If you took part in her survey not long ago, you can see the use she made of your answers!

In case you have not heard, the Henneth Annun Story Archive (known as HASA) will be shutting down at the end of the year!

An effort is underway to rescue stories that are not found elsewhere. The details can be found here.

If you can help, the post will explain how; if you can't help, please consider passing the information along! The project can use all the signal-boost it can get!

My friend [livejournal.com profile] dawn_felagund (who is co-mod with me on Many Paths to Tread, and is also a mod of The Silmarillion Writer's Guild) is going to be a presenting a paper at Mythmoot.

She's planning to do it on why people write fanfic specifically for Tolkien, and she is trying to get as much information as possible on that, and on whether you think the Tolkien fandom is different than most other fandoms.

Here is the link to her post: Why Do You Write Tolkien Fanfic?

Dawn says she will welcome input from people who are not on her flist! I hope some of you will share your opinions with her on this subject!

There are still 8 stories in the [livejournal.com profile] wipbigbang that still do not have an artist--and one of them is mine!

If you are an artist or you know any artists, please pass along the word. The link is here:
http://wipbigbang.livejournal.com/8269.html

Besides The Hobbit, other available fandoms are Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dungeons and Dragons, Harry Potter, Marvel and Mass Effect.

There's a great project being set up at [livejournal.com profile] silwritersguild

The Silmarillion (Re-)Reading Project 2014

For those who have never read it, or who haven't read it in a long while, or who just want to re-read it again.

A few weeks ago I got a PM from a person who was publishing a scholarly work on Tolkien for permission to mention some of my stories in the essay. I gave permission, and had some nice e-mail correspondence with him.

The essay is now published as a Kindle e-book: Tolkien's Triumph: The Strange History of 'The Lord of the Rings' by John Lennard. It includes an entire section devoted to secondary works and fanfiction.

He has some very flattering things to say about my stories "A New Reckoning", "The Road to Edoras" and "In the Court of the High King". I am not the only fanfiction writer he mentions. He also includes [livejournal.com profile] pandemonium_213 (my co-author for "The Prisoner and the Hobbit") [livejournal.com profile] blslarner (analyzing "The King's Commission" and "Murder Most Foul") and [livejournal.com profile] jodancingtree (concerning her three stories "Following the Other Wizard", "The Queen's Orc", "The Grey at the End of the World").

The author has an LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bracketyjack and a blog, Reading Matters.

I think he did a wonderful job!

Hello all!

Starting tomorrow, it looks as though I will be offline at the house for a while--I am not sure for how long--it could be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. I will try to go to the library to do stuff, but I will not be as available as I have been. Emails may pile up, and any posting will be intermittent at best. I am hoping my semi-absence will be brief, but since I'm not sure, I am going to try and set things up in advance.

I am going to post the [livejournal.com profile] lotr_community April challenge today, but in order to expedite things, I will make it so that you do not have to wait for me to send out prompts.

I suggest that if you have any questions you send them to Cathleen (or to Dawn if they are of a technical nature).

I'm sorry this is happening right in the middle of B2MeM. I hope to have time to catch up on your stories during Reading Week. And I may have time to finish a few stories and post them from the library.

In more pleasant news: I got to see TH:AUJ today. My son got me the DVD (It's the combo pack that includes the DVD, the Blu-ray, and the Ultra-violet whatever that is.) and he and his girlfriend and her kids came over to watch it with me and have lunch; they just left a few minutes ago. It was a wee bit more hectic than watching it at the theater, but still, lots of fun. And I am so proud of Sophie--she behaved beautifully with the kids, and we only had to shut her in the bedroom while we ate lunch. Miss Belladonna mostly hid.

I'd also like to signal boost the following community. It is having a "prompt fest" to which you can request plot-bunnies for stories set in The Hobbit. They are accepting gen prompts as well as pairing prompts, and have several of those requested already. You can post your prompt requests between now and March 26. The great part? You do not have to claim a prompt to write in order to request a prompt! (Of course, they hope you will, but it is not a requirement.) So if there is a special story you'd like to see written, but you don't think you have time to write yourself, this is a great thing to take part in!

Here's the link to check it out!
