April 12, 2017

Going to try crossposting here first for a change!

(Crossposted from monthlydiaryday over at LJ)

April 12, 2017

7:10AM--Woke up. Fed the animals, made breakfast (actually re-heated it: we had pancakes for supper last night, and there were plenty of leftovers this morning). After breakfast we watched the news, sort of. We aren't getting "Good Morning America" or any other ABC shows right now, since they are in negotiation with DISH. We actually kind of flipped around. I don't care much for the news teams on the other networks, and neither does the DH. Anyway, we cut it off before it was over, and I checked the bank to make sure our Social Security checks had been deposited overnight (of course they had, but I always check anyhow). Then I checked my emails.

8:55--Got dressed, made the bed; washed the breakfast dishes and started the laundry, while the DH swept and mopped the house. Then the DH got out the bills and we settled in to get them paid. We pretty much always do those together--although he usually is the one to actually do the payments that have to be done on computer or by phone. But we check each other on the math and to make sure all the bills are included.

9:50--The DH went to pick up our son so he can help his dad bring home a nice glider we had on reserve at Atwoods; it had been on clearance, and they had held it for us until we could pay for it today. While they were gone, I worked on some seasonal polymer clay pieces I could take up to Braum's to sell to my co-workers. I had sold many of them Friday, so I wanted to make more to show some who were not there at the time.

The first row in the foreground is what I made today: Three pendants using white/pastel marbled clay, with little roses on them, and two pins with a unicorn. The upper rows were made last week--more unicorns. I made the mold for the unicorn cameo myself from a small jewelry box I have. Above that are the bunny pins (I also made a mold of the bunny face from a cheap toy ring) and some earrings. The eggs are decoupage or painted. I used plain white plastic eggs for those. The plastic wasn't slick like most are, but had a natural feeling finish to them.

10:30--The guys brought the glider home, and then spent some time clearing out some shrubbery where it's going to be located. I kept working on my clay while they did that.

Around noon they were done with the trimming and moving of things, so I asked if they wanted lunch, but my son had to go home, so the DH took him home and then came back quickly. (Our son only lives about 10 minutes away.) I had a sandwich and cottage cheese for lunch, and the DH heated up some leftover tuna casserole from earlier this week. We watched an episode of "Property Brothers" while we ate.

2:00--I washed up the lunch dishes, switched over some laundry and folded some clean clothes. I also finished up putting the findings on my jewelry since it had cooled from the oven.

3:15--We went out to pay a couple of bills and stop at Braums so I could show R. (a co-worker) and a few other folks the new stuff, and I could also pick a few groceries. First we dropped off the bills we were mailing, then paid the utility bill at town hall. From there we went to drop off the payment at a local furniture store (we always pay that in person because we like to talk to the owners). I went in at a nearby thrift store to look around, and then we headed to Braums. I picked up some ground beef for supper (sloppy joes tonight, and extra ground beef for tomorrow's supper), cheese, and a few other items. R. bought some of the stuff I'd brought with me--two of the bunny pins and one of the eggs.

5:00--We got home, and after putting everything away and switching the last load of laundry, I went to make supper. We ate around 6. We've been watching the evening BBC news on PBS, since we can't watch ABC right now.

6:30--I realized I needed to run up to the library. My printer's not working, and I am now the secretary for the Friends of the Library, and I needed to print out the minutes before tomorrow night's meeting (I am out of ink again on mine). Got there and back by a little after 7.

The DH had some show about buying an RV on, mostly for background, while he noodled around on his tablet, and I read some Harry Potter fanfic for a while. Then he went outside to sit on the porch, and I came over here to type up today's notes.

So, uploaded the pic, and finished this. I'll post tonight since I have to work tomorrow. Then off to bed (10PM or a wee bit after.) Good night!
*waves*

ETA: *duh* Woke up this morning to the realization that I dated it for LAST month. Note title change in subject box. *facepalm*

comments

Questions about posting here

OK, I know that voice-posts from LJ don't import.

Now I am discovering that YouTube embeds don't seem to import either. I use a lot of those, so is there a trick to embedding here? I just use the embed option at YouTube under "share", so I did not think that was an LJ code.

I would like to post here more often, but I obviously am missing some information. Any help here?

ETA: Another question: the other day, it took about an hour to import of about two years worth of LJ posts. Last night I tried to import about two days worth, and it is still running this morning. I'm afraid to interrupt it, but if it's still running when I get home from work, I might have to.

Any suggestions?

comments

Fandom Special Snowflake meme, Day Three

Day 3

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser-known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom who maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

Fic:
Flame of the Desert by pandemonium_213
This is a hilarious romp with Elrond, Glorfindel, and a third Elf named Gilfanon, as they make a journey into the desert of Valinor. The things Elf Lords will do when their wives are out of town and they are bored. Alcohol and hallucinogenics may also play a role!

Art:
Aragorn, Arwen and Frodo by RS9
A lovely drawing of those three sharing a smiling moment together.

Meta:
Tolkien's Triumph: The Strange History of 'The Lord of the Rings' by John Lennard
A fascinating essay on how LotR came to be, and all the rather unusual coincidences that combined to make it popular, as well as a nice section on why and how it has inspired so much fanfiction.

comments

Fandom Special Snowflake meme, Day Two

Day Two:

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so

Mark Watches and Mark Reads
This is a lot of fun; a guy who somehow managed to grow up without being spoiled for a lot of major popular culture, particularly various books, movies and TV shows that are big fandoms reads and watches them for the first time while blogging about his reactions. I first started in following his adventures a couple of years back when he did The Hobbit (book, not movie!). It's a blast to see his first reactions to things we who are familiar with a fandom take for granted.

Fandom in Stitches A comm that encourages fans to make fandom related quilts. I got about halfway through my quilt for "There and Back Again" before my printer went on the fritz and I couldn't print out more patterns. But I hope to finish it one day.

Organization for Transformative Works. If you are interested in the news of those who are trying to get more rights for fans, this is a great way to follow the work of the OTW, and to see what is happening in the world of copyright and trademark law as it pertains to fanworks.

comments

Fandom Special Snowflake meme, Day One

Day One

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

First: A work-in-progress fic
Eleventy-one: Too Short a Time, Book One
This is my biography of Bilbo Baggins, beginning with his birth. It's still a WIP, and young Bilbo has finally come of age. The first part is to take him right up to the day Gandalf shows up at Bag End. Part Two will take up on his arrival home. I am also posting it at FFN,, Many Paths to Tread and AO3, though not all the chapters so far are up yet at the latter.

Second: Another Work-in-Progress fic, which I am co-writing with pandemonium_213
The Prisoner and the Hobbit is an AU in which Sauron ends up a prisoner in Mandos, rather than being destroyed by the destruction of the Ring. Bilbo Baggins is in Tol Eressea, and at Gandalf's urging he and Sauron become correspondents. It sounds sort of silly and crack-y, but it's not. There are a lot of references to both our separate universes, but you don't have to have read them to understand the story. It's a lot of fun to work on, as each of us has to wait for the other person to answer the previous letter in order to move forward. We really don't know ahead of time what will happen! The story can also be found at The Silmarillion Writer's Guild.

Third: Here is a bit of my art. I don't have a lot of it, but this one was a lot of fun to make.

comments

Snowflake Meme, Day 5

Day 5

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or consume different fanworks. Give that new fandom a go. Listen to a podfic or watch some vids if you haven’t before. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

I'm completely unfamiliar with anime. I went to ff.net and picked a fandom at random, and read a nice little story. I did not know the background, but it made me want to look up "Escaflowne" and maybe check it out.

comments

It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Remember that we're using the term fanwork in the broadest sense of the word here - things like episode guides, meta, canon timelines, thematic lists, recs, fandom overviews, picspams, discussion posts, etc totally count.

2. My big AU Crossover, The Gate to Everywhere http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=1810

This is a crossover between AU LotR/Narnia, and I sat on it for a long time before finishing it up a couple of years ago for the GFIC Big Bang. Mostly because I'd like more feedback on it, and also because of Armariel's awesome artwork.

3. I still hope to add a few more if I can find them.

I hope to add another page of 2012 fic written pre-release, and then for post movie fic, but haven't had a chance yet.

Day 2

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

Well, Grey Wonderer took one of my LotR fanfic recs (I'd like to second her rec of Elanor's "A Secret Gate"), so I decided to go with something different, and rec some non-Tolkien fic:

Day 3

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

Some of you have been checking out other participant's recs and self-recs from the Day 1 and Day 2 posts. If you've interacted with anyone new, you can absolutely count that for Day 3!

Can anyone tell me why my first cut did not work? I thought I highlighted 1, 2 and 3, but it only cut 1.

comments

*Sigh* Not my best day...

LJ being uncooperative is more than a little annoying right now!

I need to make a post about the new stories for the Yule Exchange. Can't. Because of LJ.

I need to find an old post to link to. On LJ.

And all of my friends seem to be MIA. So here I am over at DW. Do you suppose I will be able to import, or would that be affected by the troubles over at LJ?

This snowflake meme looks interesting. I might take that up!

In non-LJ news, I am waiting for the cable guy. Intermittent tiling on the TV; intermittent outages on my internet; and now intermittent outages on our landline. He's supposed to be here before 5. But I need to go into Stillwater--

because (good news) I have a new part-time job: teaching knitting and crocheting at JoAnns! But I need to get over there before they close to pick up and sign some paperwork so I can teach classes this weekend!

Other good news: I am listening to the cast recording of LOTR: The Musical.

comments

The page that came up with I tried to get on LJ said they were doing "emergency maintenance".
Halloween pics
This is the first chance I got to upload our Halloween pics. I thought I'd try crossposting them from DW, and see how it works. I am having to use Rich Text, because I can't remember the DW code for a cut; also the pics are very big. Sorry!
( Pics behind the cut )

comments

The Bacon Meme

Saw this on LJ, too!

From kerravonsen

"Please copy and paste this to your status if you’re constantly being asked to copy and paste things to your status by friends who copy and paste things to their statuses. Many people will not copy and paste this, but my truly sarcastic friends will copy and paste it because they know this was copied and pasted from a dear friend in need of more stuff to copy and paste; and if you don’t copy and paste it, then this means you hate bacon. And if you hate bacon, the terrorists win."

comments

What's up with LJ?

I am having the devil of a time trying to edit posts, make comments and opening cuts! I think it must be an LJ thing as I've seen a few others are having the same problem. *sigh*

Anyone know what's up?

comments

Welcome to my Dreamwidth Journal

If you are here, mostly I use this Dreamwidth Journal for posting and linking my fanfics, as well as for occasional personal posts and photos, and as a back-up for my LiveJournal. You will find that most of my posts, though, concern the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and tend to be very hobbit-centric.

You do not need to ask my permission to remix, podfic, translate, create art for or create secondary fanwork of any fanwork I have created. You should credit me and include a link back to my work. And please let me know because I'd love to see it.

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License.

You are welcome to use, redistribute, quote, or make derivative works of material I have posted on this site as long as I receive proper credit and the resulting works bear the same license.

comments

ATTENTION LOTR BIG BANG PARTICIPANTS!!!!

I am posting this from DW in the hopes that it will cross-post. I will make a proper announcement at the BB comm when LJ is working again. But this is time sensitive, so:

Attention LOTR Big Bang Participants!

Due to a number of unforeseen logistical problems with posting the stories at the LJ Community, the following change has been made:

Authors:

We are asking the authors to upload the stories at the Many Paths to Tread archive. I believe that most of our participants already have accounts there, but if you do not, it is a very simple matter to sign up. If you have any questions about it, please e-mail a mod.

Because we may not be able to hide the stories until the reveal date, we ask that if possible, you wait until this weekend to upload the story.

We ask you to email a mod once the story is up, giving us the URL of the story. On the reveal date, we will make a master links post to all of the stories here at the LOTR Big Bang Community.

Once the links post is up, you are free to post your stories anywhere else you like.

Since you will be uploading your own stories, here is how to put the illustrations and art in:

How to post your images using the rich-text editor:
1.	Upload your image to your image host. You will need to copy the image's URL.
2.	In the Story Text field, find the icon with the green tree. It is located in the second row on the text editor, slightly right of center. Click the icon.
3.	Paste the image's URL into the Image URL field. Add a brief description of the image in the Image Description field. This will help visitors with screen readers understand what is on your page. Click the green Insert button in the lower-left corner.
The artwork has been added to your story! Fill out the rest of the story form and click Add Story.

Artists:

We ask that you provide your author with the URL for your art, so that she may include it in the story.

We also encourage you to add your art to the archive under your own name. To do that, on the MPTT site, log in and click Add New Story. Choose the "Artwork" Category. Then follow the above steps. In "story summary" put Art Gallery, and just mention which story it is an illustration for. Use the "chapter notes" field to provide a little information about the piece if you want to.

If you need any help with uploading your story or art, please email us.

We are sorry for the change in plans at this late date, and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but after much discussion it was decided that this was the simplest solution to our problems.

Thank you for your patience! We have really been novices at this Big Bang stuff, and have learned a lot.

comments

My garden

(Posting here because poor LJ seems to still be under the weather.)

Actually, bed by bed-- my garden is growing. And tonight at supper we had the first bit of its bounty this year.

I made mashed potatoes with fresh chives and parsley from my herbs, and chicken parmesan with fresh basil and oregano.

Our salads consisted of red oak leaf lettuce, mesclun, and green onion from the garden.

My radishes and potatoes are coming up, my carrots have begun to sprout, and the cauliflower, cabbage, and Swiss chard I bought as nursery plants have not died. The green lettuce is iffy-- it doesn't look too good, but I'm hoping it will come back after a few days of regular watering. But the red lettuce was great!

I have some tomato plants in my little front porch greenhouse: Early Girl and Brandywine. I just repotted them in slightly larger peat pots-- it's still too soon for them to go outside.

comments

Hobbit Ficathon

Since quite a few of my friends are over here now, I thought I would create a hobbit_ficathon Community here on Dreamwidth!

Here is a link to the profile: http://hobbit-ficathon.dreamwidth.org/profile

I hope that this will boost activity at both communities!

comments

Well, I thought I'd make a post here

Seems like almost everyone's over here. I know that a lot more of my friends are here, but I'm not sure if I've got everybody that's here at DW friended in both places. This could be confusing...

Anyway, I guess I'll start posting and checking my "reading page" here more often. It seems weird not to call it a friends list.

comments

Crosspost?

OK. I'm attempting a crosspost from DW, because something's weird at LJ: any attempt to "Post an Entry" or "Edit Entry", the page is coming up blank. Actually, the page does come up-- the header's there and the page title, but no text box or anything to post with.

If this should come across at LJ, is anyone else having this trouble tonight?

comments
