Well, it's taken most of the day to catch up on my flist and read and review the Challenge 24 stories (which were wonderful as usual) but now I can take the time to tell a bit about my day yesterday...

Fortunately the community center where we hold the annual event had little storm damage. It's up near I-10, and so was sort of safe.

I was a little late getting there. I was teaching a class at 10:30 on "Duct-tape Dummies" (which is how to make a tailor's dummy out of an old T-shirt and some duct tape) and I got there at 10:15. Only one person was able to do the hands on part of the class, but several others observed. I waited until after the class to change into my garb. I also had to get the gift table set up. I wandered around, schmoozed a bit, helped with making some tokens to be passed out in court in the evening. I got to talk to Lady E. and found out that she's now sharing a FEMA trailer with her father, and waiting to see what money she will be getting to rebuild. Then I bugged out and went to Wendy's to grab some lunch, as feast wasn't till evening, and I'd had no time to bring anything with me (except my contributions to the potluck).

As soon as I got back, I went out to the fighting field at the back of the building to observe the Baronial Championship. We had five fighters taking part, and it was fairly interesting to watch, but I soon got sidetracked talking to my friends from one of the Louisiana groups, Baroness F. and her husband. I was relieved to hear that they had suffered minimal damage, for I had not seen either of them since the storm. I was distressed to hear that some other good friends, Lord C. and his wife, Lady L. had lost everything, and were not expected to return from their storm induced exile. (Our group also lost two families that way, both ending up staying in the areas where they had evacuated to.)

In the course of idle conversation, I discovered that Lady F. reads fanfic, so I was excited to be able to point her in the directions of several great stories. She might even read some of mine. The two of us had plenty of time to talk, as we spent the rest of the afternoon, after the Championship was decided, filling in scrolls for Baronial Court.

Court was very long--their Excellencies passed out a lot of new Baronial awards. I was surprised myself to receive one: the Baroness' Fourregiere (sp?) for personal service. And they had some very special awards to make to those who had helped out after Katrina. And then they had been delegated by their Majesties to pass out a couple Kingdom level awards. One of them was an Award of Arms to young *now* Lord O. whom I have watched grow up for years. I was *so* excited for him.

Of course, we had our traditional King Cake, and the one who found the baby was one of the couple who have come down to help out with FEMA. I believe they are from the Midrealm. She became the Lady of Misrule for the evening, and got to wear the jester's crown, and make everyone do silly things.

The potluck was delicious, as usual. I left not long after, so I don't know if they got around to dancing, but the musicians had begun to play, so I am sure they probably got *some* dancing in.

Anyway, I'll see if I can post some pics soon!

That sounds like a lovely day! I don't think we have anything similar here but I remember I googled around for it some time ago because it sounded really interesting. I would love to dress up in a mideval dress!

Congratulations on your award!

Pictures would be lovely, yes. :D

I am so glad you had a wonderful day, but it is sad to read about your friends and all they lost.
