International Tolkien Reading Day
Mar. 25th, 2012 04:46 pmFor "International Read Tolkien Day" I'm choosing a passage from The History of the Hobbit which shows how the encounter would have gone with Gollum IF the One Ring had NOT been the One Ring, but merely a magic ring of invisibility with no other particular power... Reading Tolkien aloud
Mar. 26th, 2010 10:01 pmI had a great time last night, doing the reading at the library, and I had lots of fun last year, reading Roverandom by voice-post, and taking part in
read_lotr_aloud.
So, I thought I'd do it again.

My Tolkien Reading
Mar. 25th, 2010 08:50 pmWell, since I was not sure anyone would show up at my reading (besides my husband) I was quite gratified when a girl did show up, right at 6:30.
We talked a while-- she's a student at OSU.
I read two passages from RotK. The one you recommended,
shirebound, in which Sam speaks of stories, and the passage from "The Field of Cormallen" which begins with Sam's awakening and ends with "and tears are the very wine of blessedness".
Then I read an excerpt from "On Fairy Stories", the passage about eucatastrophe. It seems almost a companion piece with the Cormallen passage, where he tells of "joy beyond the walls of the world, poignant as grief."
Then we talked a while. She's familiar with fanfic, though she said she's not read a lot of LotR fanfic-- mostly HP. She usually reads at ff.net, and didn't know about some of the LotR only archives, so I'm going to send her some links.
I would have *liked* a couple more people to show up, but considering that I arranged it on short notice, I will consider it a moderate success.
The DH is already thinking of things we can do next year, bless him!

Tolkien Reading Day
Mar. 10th, 2010 10:41 amMarch 25 is Tolkien Reading Day.
I got up the nerve to volunteer to do a reading at the local library! After a few days of phone tag, I finally talked to the librarian in charge, so March 25, 6:30-7:30, I'll hold a reading event there!
Now I'm really nervous. I don't know if *anyone* will show up-- there aren't many Tolkien fans in this small town...
And I have to decide what to read!
I need some encouragement here, please! And maybe a little advice on spreading the word-- there's no radio or TV station here, and the only paper is a tiny local weekly. I'm wondering if I did the right thing...but it's too late to back out now!
