dreamflower: gandalf at bag end (Default)

Well, my DH was not real happy, but he wasn't too upset with *me*--but this is not looking good.

He took a look at things after supper, and tried to do a system restore himself. Which did exactly the same thing to him: froze up entirely at a certain point. So he called tech support: there is bad news and worse news. The bad news is that this may have been a virus, and has resulted in something they called a "destructive recovery"; the worse news is that the extended warranty we purchased was *not* from HP but from Circuit City where we bought it. This means dealing with the store, which we are given to understand may be difficult. The upshot is that the computer may be down for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks!
In the meantime, although I am using his laptop, he has asked me *not* to open any emails, in case of viruses. I can still do other things on it though. I don't plan to do any writing on it, as I don't want the hassel of transferring files when the other one is fixed, but I can do that in longhand anyway. But I can access LJ, and I can still read and surf the web on it.

I'm thinking of what I have probably lost. Thank goodness all my completed fics are archived at SoA. I can get them back from there. I only had two WIPs, and they were both in very early stages, so I haven't lost a lot there. But I've probably lost all my photos from the past year, as well as my nearly completed Chapter of the Week summary for "Houses of Healing". The worst thing I lost was a file of "backstory". This was where I had begun to work out the ways in which "my" Middle-earth fit in with canon and fanon, and had some backstory for many of the characters, with plot bunnies I wanted to explore. It's completely gone except for what I can reconstruct out of my head. I'm sure there are some other things as well, but I don't have my head wrapped around it all yet.

Since I can't get at my email right now, please let me know on LJ if the package should arrive. I'm planning to look for my receipt today, but I'm wishing now I had insured it. But $35 to mail it was as much as I could afford. I'm going to be heart-broken if you don't get the present I made you!
