I've begun a new, and rather different story: "Miss Dora Baggin's Book of Manners: Or the Shire Hobbit's Guide to Proper Behavior for Every Occasion". It purports to be a book of Shire etiquette, written by Frodo's Aunt Dora.

Before I go and read, I'll ask, did you base the etiquette on any real-life books or columns? Emily Post, Miss Manners -- something Victorian?

Oh, what a splendid premise! I am immediately fascinated to read the rest of this work, and can hardly wait to glean Aunt Dora's viewpoints on all the subject headings she's laid out for us. Charming.

I'm going for the general tone of both Miss Manners (whom I adore and wish we still got her in our paper) and some of the Victorians. But I'm also going to use canon and Letters, as well as some of my own little notions I've developed over the last couple of years...

Yes, I'm going to have lots of fun with Aunt Dora! She's always fascinated me, ever since I read of Bilbo's parting gift to her, and her description. I picture her as a hobbity combination of Dear Abby and Miss Manners, but from that uniquely Baggins perspective...

I've read the Introduction and Table of Contents -- already absolutely delightful! I look forward to reading more.

I love MM too! It's available on the internet somewhere, but I don't read it as often as when it was in our paper.

I'm imagining this could also pick up on Gody's Ladies Book.

Ooh, and then you could offer hand-bound, calligraphy copies, nicknamed The Little Lavender Book, indispensable for every Hobbit Bride!
