Other things happened on 9/11
Sep. 11th, 2006 02:30 amNot everything that happened on September 11 has been bad. For some of us, that date has another meaning.

Thirty years ago today my husband and I got married. It's been a wonderful thirty years--wonderful when it began, and growing better through the years.
Five years ago, on our silver anniversary, we were preparing to renew our vows. In spite of what happened, we decided to go through with it, partly because we did not know how to call it off, and partly because to do so would have seemed like letting the bad guys score another victory, however small it might be. Only a tiny handful of our guests showed up, yet all who did seemed glad for the re-affirmation that life *could* go on.
So when you talk about how dreadful 9/11 is, don't forget all the people for whom it is nevertheless a good day to remember--all the birthdays and anniversaries and other happy occasions that have been overshadowed by "a date that will live in infamy".
And I look at this wedding picture, and think how young we once were...

Date: 2006-09-11 08:02 am (UTC)And I agree with you. Not everything that happened on 9/11 was ever bad. It helps to think of the positive things. So said some of the FDNY firefighters, even on that day and all the days after. :-)

Date: 2006-09-11 08:16 am (UTC)Even though 9/11 is associated with terror, loss and pain, also good things happened on that day: babies were born or people like you celebrate a great and loving marriage. In darkness there is always a seedling of hope and we have to nourish that seed so that it can grow :) So yay on you guys celebrating it with family today and I hope it will be great {{{hugs}}}
What a beautiful photo!

Date: 2006-09-11 10:28 am (UTC)Congratulations on reaching such a milestone. I'm glad you were able to go ahead with your celebration on your 25th. You're absolutely right that to have not held your little party would have been to let the bad guys win just a little more. Go You!
Hope today is a pleasant rememberance of a beautiful day in your life.
GT.

Date: 2006-09-11 11:01 am (UTC)It's nice to see a happy 9/11 occasion. I read an article yesterday about babies born on and around 9/11 to people around the country, as well as to the lost firefighters/cops/civilians here in NYC. While nothing will ever make the pain I associate with that day disappear, it is good to focus on something positive.

Date: 2006-09-11 12:57 pm (UTC)Yeah, it'd be nice to remember the good stuff the Sept. 11 represents. Just like with Katrina.

Date: 2006-09-11 03:04 pm (UTC)In Norway we have this question everyone that remember it knows the answer to and that is "Where were you when Oddvar BrĂ¥ broke his skiing stick?" Now it is "Where were you on 9/11?" I remember where I was on both occasions very well.

Date: 2006-09-11 04:23 pm (UTC)As you said, this day--as a date--should be kept in balence for I am sure there are many great joys to counteract the sad event that happened five years ago--your anniversary being one of them! Cheers!!!

Date: 2006-09-11 08:49 pm (UTC)I like that you went ahead partly because you felt it would be giving the terrorists what they wanted to do otherwise. I felt much the same way when I travelled to the US for my holiday only a month later.

Date: 2006-09-11 09:18 pm (UTC)Affirmation of life and love are always a lovely thing to have.
And can I just say...30?! Wow - hope my sweetie and I are as happy as you two at 30 yrs.

Date: 2006-09-11 09:38 pm (UTC)30 years, sounds like a hobbity marriage. (just wait, after another 1500 or so you can call yourselves Elves)
(sorry, in a whimsical mood)

Date: 2006-09-12 01:28 am (UTC)I just wish that the event was not constantly referred to by the date only. It seems very unfair.

Date: 2006-09-12 01:30 am (UTC)You are right--many good things happen/ed on that date--it's not just reserved for that one event.
And I'm glad you like the photo. It's faded a good deal over the years.

Date: 2006-09-12 01:35 am (UTC)That's just what we thought at the time. My only regret is that the friend who was going to take pictures didn't show, and we have none of the vow renewal. *sigh*
It's been a nice day, but the DH had to work, so we'll be celebrating on the coming weekend.

Date: 2006-09-12 01:39 am (UTC)So many good things happen every day. I know for those closest to the event, nothing will ever erase the bad memories, but it's nice to have good ones to kind of balance the bad out.
((((hugs))))))

Date: 2006-09-12 01:44 am (UTC)I'm not sure how proud I should be about simply living my life with the one I love--it seems like it would be an awful lot of effort *not* to! But really, it all boils down to being with the person you were meant to be with.

Date: 2006-09-12 01:46 am (UTC)Well, 9/11 has a little different meaning for me, as you see! But there *are* these defining events--over here it was always "Where were you when JFK was killed?"

Date: 2006-09-12 01:52 am (UTC)Yes--one of the things they wanted to do was to disrupt our lives and bring us to a standstill over here. Not letting them do it is just one way of showing them they will never succeed.
