Fic recommendation
Feb. 13th, 2007 01:01 pmOne of the things I've been doing since I've been feeling too bad to concentrate on writing is *reading*; and one thing I've found is a very long, complicated and intriguing AU WIP, a Fourth Age fic about Sam's oldest son
Frodo Gardner by Delores J. Nurss
http://www.dreamdeer.grailmedia.com
The attentive reader will notice right away the subtle signs that this is AU. And the author comes up with some incredible explanations for certain things--if she is making someone act seemingly OOC, it is most definitely part of the plot. We follow young Frodo on an adventure that in some ways holds very nearly as much danger for him as the Quest did for his namesake. Along the way there are encounters with most of the other members of the Fellowship and their friends in the south.
There are some chapters that are a bit on the dark side--but they are compelling, and hope and heroism remain. And there is also humor and love and intrigue as well.
Be aware: the story is currently at 172 chapters and still going. On the other hand, the chapters are not especially long ones.

DIY has a series of good articles on book-binding beginning with this one:
