Watching Helm's Deep for the umpteenth time, and it occured to me--and not for the first time--that PJs Elven warriors bear a more than passing resemblance to Vulcans, as they march in so precisely, with their faces so carefully blank.

Coincidence? I think not. What do you think?

I don't know Vulcans but I wondered about their lack of emotion too. Perhaps it's because they've seen so many battles that one more doesn't make such a big impact as the battle would for mortals?

I've wondered about that, too. I also noticed that several of Eomer's, and especially Theoden's,lines sounded an awful lot like some of the stuff the Klingons would say. I kept expecting one of them to say, "Today is a good day to die.":)

Hadn't thought of it before - but now that you mention it...

Don't know about Vulcans, since I've only seen a few eps of ST, that connection never would have occured to me.

The Elves now: that's how they would march into battle.

What an interesting idea, and actually, it adds a dimension to the Vulcans, doesn't it? They weren't immortal like the Elves, of course, but apparently their life spans were long enough to acquire the same stoicism and world-weariness. As Mr. Spock would say: fascinating.

I had that same thought, first time I saw it. But then, having Vulcans on the brain is a common occurence for me. ;)

PJ's elves make me shudder, not from excitement but his interpretation of them that makes them so... plastic. I can't put my finger on it, but there are days that I hope that PJ and his crew never get to do the Silmarillion.

Too funny! I remember having the same thought the first time I watched it!

I have to agree with you. I've thought that for a long time. But I also agree with rhapsody11, I don't care for how the elves were portrayed in the movies. Yes, Orlando Bloom was gorgeous and Cate Blanchett was beautiful, but I found them a little dull, to be honest. It's only now that I'm reading the Silmarillion (I know, I know, but better late than never), that I'm beginning to see the passion and the power of the elves. Honestly, I think the ones in the movies would have been better off if they had been played like Vulcans. Now there's a passionate race for you! I'd better shut up now before my Trek geekiness shows too clearly, and before I alienate any other Bloom fans...

Well what is beautiful and what not is different by person. Except for Haldir perhaps, but the rest of the elves I did see ... I don't find them beautiful... That would explain it as well I guess. The casting for the men however...
