I let danachan talk me into signing up for yuletide!

That means I will have to write NON-LotR fic!

Here's the fandoms I offered to do:
Randall Garrett - Lord Darcy stories (Any characters)
Agatha Christie - Miss Marple series (Any characters)
Agatha Christie - Poirot series (Any characters)
CS Lewis - Chronicles of Narnia (Any characters)
David Eddings - Belgariad Malloreon series (Any characters)
Cadfael (tv) (Any characters)
Beauty and the Beast (tv) (Any characters)

And I requested Randall Garrett's Lord Darcy, Brother Cadfael and C.S. Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet series.

What *have* I done?

Congrats!! It really is a lot of fun! :-))) (I did it last year, but I'm not going to do it this year since I'll be moving overseas right around the time they're due)... There are a lot of high quality writers who join, so there are tons and tons of fics that are a pleasure to read!

For some reason, I had no idea you'd read the Belgariad and Malloreon. I rather liked those!

Well, I'm a little nervous, but at this point I won't even know what I'll be writing, or if anyone will write one of mine...

But if it will get me some Lord Darcy fic to read, it will be worth it.

Yes, it will. I've only ventured one tiny little toe out of LotR territory--and it wasn't very far at all. This is going to really be a stretch for me.

I really enjoyed them; the Belgariad more than the Mallorean. Eddings tapped into a lot of the same archetypes JRRT used, without actually ripping him off. And it's far more old fashioned sword-and-sorcery than it is to an epic like LotR--the quest is far more episodic in nature. And Silk and Barak remind me a lot of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. And Belgarion reminds me a *lot* of Luke Skywalker.

And Belgarath and Polgara are awesome, and are *not* your average sorcerors! I think the two of them and Durnik are the most unique of the characters.

While I don't re-read those with the faithfulness of LotR or The Hobbit, I have re-read them more than once.

Oh, I agree completely. Belgarath and Polgara are some of the more unique magic-user types I've seen in fantasy novels. And I just love Durnik's humility and his abiding love for Polgara.

I hadn't even made the Fafhrd/Grey Mouser comparison - been a very long time since I read those, but you do actually have a point!

Belgarion/Luke Skywalker? Yep, even down to the whining. ;)

I read the Belgariad once a long time ago. I don't remember all that much of the story or the characters, but I just remember loving it at the time!

And the Chronicles of Narnia remain among my favorite books ever.

I love the Space Trilogy, and the way CSL used the Aritotelian model of the universe to create his worlds. I love them all--I think Perelandra is the most poetic and touching, but I also love the first one, and Ransom's first views of Malacandra and his changing perception.

But I think my favorite just to *read* as a suspenseful adventure is That Hideous Strength!

I would *so* love to see some fanfic in that milieu!
