Fic Year in review meme
Jan. 4th, 2008 08:58 amAt the urging of
danae_b here is my fic year in review--
2007 in review.
Total Stories Written for the Year (since January 1, 2007): 63 stories; 125,227 words of fic, consisting of stories, drabbles, poetry and chapters of WIPs and one essay.
Overall Thoughts: I went through several sustained bursts of creativity for shorter fics, interspersed with some rather lengthy dry spells. But I did not do as much justice to my longer multi-chaptered stuff.
Favourites of the batch: "Concussion", because I think I did Bilbo justice; "Miss Dora Baggin's Book of Manners" because it's given me so much food for thought as I try to figure out hobbit society; "Eucatastrophe: The Return" because I always love the Eucatastrophe-AU and giving Frodo a different happy ending!
Best of the batch: Technically, I think the poem I wrote "I: Like an Inspiring Iluvatar" came out to my satisfaction; also, "On Amon Sûl" because I tried something very different with the POV and it worked. And I think "Concussion" was a pretty good gap-filler for The Hobbit.
Most underappreciated by the universe: "Clear Conscience (the Clear Shot Remix)" which didn't get as much response as I'd hoped, though what response it did get was pretty positive.
Most fun to write "Miss Dora Baggins' Book of Manners" Miss Dora is a blast to write! I can just turn myself loose and not have to worry about plot or continuity or any of that! And she has such a fun, distinctive voice!
And I had a lot of fun writing "The Archives Incident" for
danae_b--she really knew what buttons to push when she asked me for a Minas Tirith adventure featuring Frodo and Pippin! That was so much fun to do!
Sexiest fic: *snerk* Me? Write anything remotely *sexy*?!?! Dream on.
"Holy crap, that's wrong even for you" fic: Well, there's my incomplete baby Mary Sue, which I suppose I should finish one day--but I don't think that's what this category means.
Fic that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: "The Dwarf Dagger" in which I dealt with tragedy in the Shire; and "Sandcastles" because I'd never really thought much about elderly Merry and Pippin before.
Hardest fic to do: Definitely my Yuletide fic, "Outliving the Universe" in the Narnia fandom. Since it was my first time to venture outside of LotR, I was really nervous about it.
Also, managing to get through the entire alphabet of prompts from
there_n_back in March. Some of those prompts were crazy!
Biggest disappointment: Not finishing "Road to Edoras". Every time I thought the ending was in sight, *something* threw me a curve--such as the characters suddenly hijacking the story for a completely unanticipated sub-plot!
Biggest surprise:
pippinfan1 nominating the entire "Alphabet of Middle-earth" anthology for a MEFA. The stories were so diverse, I had a dickens of a time figuring out how to categorize it!
Most telling fic: As in "personally telling", I don't think there was one of those this year--one in which I felt driven to write by my own circumstances.
Story I haven't yet written, but intend to: I have two on the back burner, involving OCs (Dana must be rubbing off on me!) and one of those is *very* unexpected! Also, and assuming that "Road to Edoras" will cooperate, there's the sequel to it, working title "In the Court of the High King".
I've also got a bunny for some more "Tip and Tulip" stories, but I don't know if they will be stand-alones, or be incorporated into longer stories.
And I want to work some more on that LotR/Narnia crossover that I had put aside.
And I wasn't as prolific last year as in the past. *sigh*
ETA: I don't think I will experiment with Rich Text anymore. Aarrgghh!
