So, this is what happened this morning! And apparently Twitter and Facebook were hacked too!

I'm sure glad I got my LJ backed up on DW now!

I've heard rumor that JournalFen might've been affected, too.

Hackers really suck. :(

I need to remember how I backed up my LJ before. I keep screwing it up! I did it once before I moved to Trinidad and it was a godsend for me in the first few weeks I was there when I didn't have internet at home and I was sort of lonely at night, to read through my old posts and comments! But ever since then, I can't seem to do it right and I can never access the archive once I supposedly download it! And I have a LOT of material since 2002!

Technically it isn't hacking: someone or a group is suddenly placing a huge demand on the site and making it impossible for other users to connect or login. Your content here at LJ was never at risk :)

Well, that would explain why I couldn't access lj at all this morning. It was stressing me out a little bit. Hard to start the day without a dose of friends' list.

Rhapsody's right. Your info wasn't at risk. They just sent the system more information that it could handle all at once. It's called a "Denial of Service" attack. It's more akin to blocking the doors than breaking in and stealing stuff. Still, backups are always a good thing.
