I responded, and she gave me five questions

Questions and answers behind the cut:

1. Since you have worked as a teacher, if you could pass one skill on to kids in your community, what would it be and why?

Art techniques. I am a firm believer that anyone can learn to express him/her self creatively through art. Yes, it’s true that talent makes a difference; not everyone will have spectacular results. But I’d like every child to know that by following a few simple directions, he or she can create something that will feel satisfying and will express his or her feelings in a unique way.

The first things that schools cut out when there’s a budget crunch are art and music. I don’t have the necessary knowledge to teach music, but I know lots of art and craft techniques that can enrich someone’s life.

2. What has been your proudest accomplishment as a writer?

You know, I do have a few stories that stand out to me, that make me stand back, so to speak, and say “Wow, I can’t believe I wrote that!” but the truth is, that most of those I felt in writing them as if I were more of a conduit than an active writer. I am proud of those stories, but not necessarily of my accomplishing them, if that makes sense?

I think what I am really proud of is the whole body of my work. For the most part, my stories seem to hang together, in spite of the fact that they were written all in different orders and at different times. I feel like I know the hobbits I’ve written about, and that I’ve learned something new about Arda every time I write one—and that does make me feel accomplished.

3. What is your persona in the SCA? (Couldn't resist--sorry!)

*grin* Don’t apologize! You know as well as I do how SCA people love their persona stories! My SCA persona is AElfwenna of Shrewsbury. She lives in the 12th century, during the time of the civil war between Stephen and Matilda. And if you are at all familiar with Ellis Peters’ Brother Cadfael mysteries and think that the setting sounds familiar, you’d be absolutely right!

4. What is one book that you never want to read again and why?

There have been a few. Most of them I’ve managed to purge from my memory, but the first book to ever make me regret reading it was James Blishs’s Black Friday. It was bleak and dark and gave me nightmares.

I was also disappointed in the ending of Phillip Pullman’s The Golden Compass from the His Dark Materials series. I am unabashedly a traditionalist when it comes to endings. I don’t mind a short story with a dark twist at the end to make you think, but when I’ve invested the time to read three full length novels, I want my happy ending.

5. What is the oddest thing about you?

Uh, well, some of the things that some people think are odd I don’t think most of the people on my flist would. I mean the fact that I can somehow relate everything to hobbits in some fashion seems perfectly normal to most of my friends. Likewise the fact that I never minded running errands on the way to or from events in garb. Or that almost all my reading now consists of fanfiction…

Hmm… what is there odd about me that people on *LJ* would find odd?

Well, for one thing, I almost constantly have an earworm of one sort or another! Usually it’s whatever I’ve heard last—it will run in my head over and over until something else supplants it. A lot of the time I sing along with it—not too bad if it’s a song I actually like, but when it’s something I can’t stand it’s more than a little annoying.

For some inexplicable reason, for the last two days, my latest earworm has been the theme song from the old 60s TV series “Flipper”. *sigh*

No idea why. I haven’t actually heard it lately.
