OK, it was probably dumb of me to assume I was all right with my Microsoft Home and Student Office program. I did not know it was a trial program-- I've been using it since 2007, after all. BUT NOW THEY TELL ME IT IS EXPIRED. ALL MY FILES ARE BASICALLY USELESS. I can open them and read them, but they will not allow me to save anything, or copy, or paste. Every fic I am working on, my finish-a-thon crossover, "Ancestress", my most recent challenge story, all of them. And my 100 things that I was working on. Dozens and dozens of files, now unusable. And if I want to convert over to buying it, I can't even find out the price for the program I have-- they want me to go straight to 2010 version, which I don't know will work to open the files I did with the old program. Not to mention we can't afford it.

I have some things backed-up in Google.docs and some things in Dropbox, but not the most recent versions. I quit using Google.docs so much because they were giving me trouble too.

Does anyone know any kind of way to work around this? Or have any suggestions?

I'm about ready to tear my hair out.

I know after this I will put my back-ups in a better place than I have them currently.

ETA Even the files I stored in Dropbox that were written on that program are inaccessible for all practical purposes...

ETA In case there is any doubt about it, Shirebound is one of the sweetest and most awesome people on the planet! Plus, she is also a genius, coming up with a brilliant way to solve my problem. I am so glad that she's my friend! (((massive hugs!)))

I can't help with work-arounds, unfortunately, but I do know that if you end up getting MS Office 2010, there is a way to open your old files. I had to learn that one the hard way. I hope you're able to figure it all out.

Word documents, even from word '97 are completely compatible with Open Office. Just download Open Office here and you are on your merry way. No stress!

AUGH!
If they're in .doc or .docx format, Word 2010 will open them. But you might want to check Amazon for Word 2007; they sometimes have older versions of software for a decent discount. Short of buying a full version, though, I don't know what to suggest. There might be a conversion tool that would allow you to save them as .rtf files, which you could then open with Wordpad. There's also Open Office, which supposedly supports Word formats, but I hear it's no great shakes, especially with regard to the spell check. Then again, Wordpad doesn't have spell check at all, so....

A few ideas:

1) Can you attach any of the files to an email? Maybe someone (like me) with the full MS Office version can save or convert them in some way.

2) Can you "open with" notepad?

3) Can you go to Google docs and upload them there?

Rhapsody's suggestion is a good one. Thanks for telling us this as I'm using a trial version of Word that came with my computer!

I vote with Rhapsody. I have used Open Office--they did their best to match the "look & feel" of MS Word. It worked fine for me.

Good Luck!

Oh my, what a catastrophe! I don't have a clue what you should do but it seems like there've been some good suggestions. *hugs and good luck wishes*

If I understand correctly, Word 2010 is compatible with the 2007 version and even the earlier versions. As others have said, your old documents will need to be saved in a special, but fairly easy, way -- but it should work.

That said, as much as I detest Open Office Writer, it might be the best temporary way to access your files.

I'll just second everyone else's suggestions.

And hope with you that you can get the upgrade soon.

*hugs*

One other thing I thought of, just in case the files are "uploadable", is to try to upload them to the fanfiction.net documents holder?

One other idea... are they by any chance printable? If so, you could print them out and then re-type them (*sigh*) into private LJ posts or Google docs.

When you sign in to ff.net, it usually takes you to your 'account' page. Under the 'publish' tab on the left is "doc manager"..... this is where chapters go that are waiting to be put into stories.

Did your trial version have ads at the side of it?

One other thing... don't forget to check Craigslist if you're going to shop around for Microsoft Office 2007. Listings in my area go as low as $35.00.

oooh, I missed this, but so glad it looks like it's been resolved! I was going to suggest trying to email the files to yourself. Glad Shirebound was awake! :D What ended up working in the end???

Oh my goodness. What a nightmare! However, I'm relieved to see the second ETA at the bottom. Whew! What did she say that solved the problem?

I wouldn't be any help, but I'm so glad Shirebound could help you. She's amazing.

Just saw this and read all the way through it so I know you found your solution but wow, that was a close one. Good thing Shirebound knew what to do. Glad it's resolved.
