I got the following email today:
Hi, Dreamflower!
Introductions first: my name is _____, and I'm a seventeen-year-old Italian student. I don't remember how, but some years ago I discovered the world of Tolkien-fanfiction (pretty unknown here in Italy), and as a keen Tolkien reader I got enraptured at once. Most of all I followed HASA, and though I never posted any story, I translated several of them, especially Thundera Tiger's. My greatest feat was the translation of a wonderful novel-length (more than 600 pages) story by Aiwendiel, called "A Bit of Rope" - don't know if you've ever heard of it.
However, I didn't found "Stories of Arda" until recently, and that meant I didn't found YOU until recently. Of course, any congratulation to you is unnecessary, but I feel compelled to say to you that you are - by far - the most skilled writer when it comes around Hobbits - aside Tolkien himself, that is ;)
I think I shall translate several of your stories, and indeed I've already begun! This is the first story of yours I've translated in my language, "A Merry Old Inn". I've credited you, as requested, and now I'm sending you the link to it, as you said you would love to see :)

I hope to read more of yours soon! Ah, and by the way, good year! :)
Isn't that neat? I never had anyone translate my stories before!!! *grin* Hyperbole aside (because I know of a LOT of hobbit writers who are better than I am) it's really flattering!

Date: 2013-01-04 02:26 am (UTC)I ran the Italian version through Google translator.
I am quite *certain* it was nothing like my correspondent had translated: Google came out with all the genders confused, and it translated "Good heavens!" as "Oh my God!" and "Drat" as "Hell". I am pretty sure he did not do that! But what was so funny was that Google translated "tall people" as "high people"!!!
I wish I knew Italian so I could actually read *his* translation!
