Snowflake Meme, Days 6, 7 and 8
Jan. 8th, 2013 12:05 pmOK, I missed a couple of days, so again I am playing catch-up!
Day 6
In your own space, pimp three comms or challenges and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Three communities:
1. LOTR Community Challenges
Of course I would pimp this one. It's the baby I share with
ceshaughnessy,
pearltook1 and
dawn_felagund. We have a monthly challenge, usually with prompts tailored to each writer, as well as an annual Yule fic exchange, and most years we also have a special event. We have our own archive, Many Paths to Tread, and an active Yahoo!group, LOTR_Community_GFIC. While the challenges and the archive are gen-oriented, they are not excluesively gen. I think we do a pretty darn good job, and although it is a lot of work, I think it is worth it.
Fanthropology
This is a fun comm, which mostly consists of round-up posts about how fandoms in general are perceived in the mainstream media, though there are occasional discussion posts as well. I love that it covers a wide spectrum of fandoms, many of which I've never heard of, but also keeps me informed of what's being said about fanfic outside my own little corner of the world. I especially love the weekly list of links in which fanfic has been mentioned.
Read LOTR Aloud
I LOVE this project! It was started a few years ago, and consists of various volunteers reading sections of the chapters of LotR aloud in a voice-post. It began as a one-shot project and everyone loved it so much that
lbilover made it a regular thing. So far we have read through Fellowship and are now in Two Towers. Some people only participate once in a while, some are regulars. One of our members even managed to coax SEAN ASTIN into reading a section one time! This project is so much fun to participate in, and it is so much fun to hear my friends reading, and hear what their voices sound like!
Day 7
In your own space, share something non-fannish about yourself. A passion or a hobby or a talent, something that people might not know about you. We are more than just our fandoms. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
I don't suppose most of my friends are unaware of how much I love crafting, though most of the things I share here are fannish sorts of crafts.
But one thing about my crafting they may not know is how much I love to teach others those crafts. And now I am getting a new chance to do this, as I have recently been hired to teach knitting and crochet at the local JoAnn's. I had my first classes this past weekend, and have two more scheduled later this month and one in February.
I truly had fun, and I do think that all of my students learned the basics!
Day 8
In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some examples: complete a bingo, sign up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep putting off. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback or answering comments. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Hmm…I think that my goal should be to actually adhere to an update schedule for my WIPs. I was doing it for a short while, but there have been too many interruptions. Perhaps I should make it specific, that I will stick to an update schedule from one particular date to another particular date…
OK: I resolve that from January 21, 2013 until March 29, 2013 I will update 3 of my WIPs at least once a week, one on Monday, one on Tuesday, and one on Wednesday.
To those of you who do adhere to such a schedule, any hints as to how you manage to keep it going on a regular basis would be helpful.
This meme is a lot of fun!
