I hate that bit when movie-Gandalf whacks Pippin with his staff when Pippin pledges himself to Denethor. Book-Gandalf praised his generous heart, even though he had qualms about it.

yeah, that was one of those scenes that didn't seem necessary, although my interpretation of that movie scene was that Gandalf was whacking him but secretly thinking and admiring him! ;)

I'm fairly convinced Grima should have had them take the wizard's staff when he showed up in Edoras. Okay, he needs it to do the Theoden exorcism thing, but after that, really, very little good comes out of Gandalf wielding it. *shudders at memories of the Denethor thunking*
