You'd think such a day as I had, I'd be tired enough to sleep straight through, but woke up an hour ago, and had to get up for a while.

Considering that I only had one day to be there, I had a great time at Gulf Wars. Things were streamlined at Troll ( SCA-speak for registration ) so that didn't take long, and I was able to actually find a decent parking space. As I began the long trek up to the encampement of my group, the Barony of Seleone, a couple of kind gentles who were taking supplies to their own encampment with a truck offered me a ride on the back. I haven't ridden on the tailgate of a pick-up truck since I was 12!

Spent a while schmoozing with a few of my fellow Seleonese, before heading down to the Merchant's row. Since I had cashed my paycheck before leaving to come up, I had more to spend than usual. The shopping was great! I swear, more and more merchants every year! I treated myself to my annual T-shirt, bought some calligraphy nibs, and a book I've been wanting for ages The Knight Next Door which is an account of life in the SCA, and so far is really good.

I was in time to vote for the Arts and Sciences competition, and there were some magnificent pieces there: fabulous embroidery, gorgeous stained glass, incredible calligraphy. Some of the other things that fascinated me was some beautiful linen paper made by period techniques. I *so* wanted to filch a piece and try it out, LOL! And one lady had *knitted* the most unbelievable pair of cote-hardies (dresses with long tight sleeves, fitted to the hips and then flaring out to the ground) in fair-isle patterns.
And I *so* wish my husband could have seen the wonderful display of period fishing equipment!!! I do hope that same gentle will come back next year, as my DH would have *loved* it. (I discovered there had actually been classes on period fishing, and almost felt like crying that he couldn't be there for it.)

Missed the hound coursing *and* the horses this year, but got to watch much of the field battle. Oh! The clacking of swords on armor, and the smell of rusty sweat! The sight of the armies clashing is so stirring!

Made my way back through Merchant's Row again, and ran into a number of friends I have not seen in ages, and had a lovely chat with the ladies in the calligraphy supplies booth.

Went back to our encampment in time for Baronial Court, which was impressive, fun and nice to see several of our gentles recieve muchly deserved awards. Left right after, for though I would have loved to stay for the Known World Great Court, I knew I should head back, since I have to go to work in the AM.

Did more walking in one day than I do all year long otherwise.

Found loads of lovely comments on the recipe fic challenge.

Think I'll try going back to bed now. I have to get up again in about 3 hours.
