Why do people say they will do things
Dec. 14th, 2005 10:37 am...when they have *no* intention of following through?
Last week, we had some workmen come and start work. They did pour the concrete, and get the walls fixed in the sewing room, but...
The contractor told us that Monday the framing would be done on the back porch. He finally got around to delivering materials, but no workers ever showed up.
Tuesday, they showed up about 1PM, and gee whiz, they worked until 3:30 before they knocked off for the day. *ONE* wall framed out. *ONE*!! A three and a half hour work day, lovely.
The weather, by the way, was perfect Mon. and Tues.
It's almost 11AM--no one's showed yet, though the contractor came by last night to get $400 from us, and promise that *TODAY* the rest of the porch would be up and they'd be started on roofing. It's *supposed* to rain today, but it's been nice so far--if they'd been here early enough, they might could have done what he said, but *NOW*? *sigh* Not @#$%#@$&* likely!
And the worst is I can't settle to anything, because I don't know--they *could* show up any minute...or not.
And for those who still care, here's today's headlines:

I'm so discouraged, and yes, a little bit ticked as well.

Date: 2005-12-14 06:03 pm (UTC)Not unlike when Rita hit us and everybody seemed to be oh-so-worried about the Keys and Fantasy Fest in Key West having to be rescheduled (think Mardi Gras only with less clothing and more drinking and drugs) - and 95% of Broward County was still without power/running water. Only an order of magnitude worse.

Date: 2005-12-14 08:41 pm (UTC)I hope it is. My son called a few minutes ago, and I had to tell him we might not make it up there after all. *sigh*

Date: 2005-12-14 07:06 pm (UTC)As for the media, I suppose it is all about money--sponsors' buying ads on the news programs. The public has a short attention span and if they stop watching, the ad money goes down and the PTB get a little bit less wealthy. So the news has moved on to the next thing that will keep everyone watching. I am so sympathetic with all of you, though. I knew this would happen, dammit. Just when you really need the help and you are all so sick, sick, sick of deprivation and destruction, you are forgotten.
I hope all your work gets done before too long. I suppose the repair people can just about write their own ticket--they must be in great demand. Sigh. I guess patience will have to be your "ticket." Do take care of yourself.
*sends hugs and good wishes too...and hobbits to deliver them*

Date: 2005-12-14 08:48 pm (UTC)The workers are here finally! And yes, I know they are in huge demand: roofers, builders, debris removers, all that sort of thing...there are swarms of them here from out of state and still there are not enough to go around.
I'll take the hugs and good wishes though, and send ((((hugs)))back. I'll keep the hobbits. I bet if Sam supervises them those men will get some work done! LOL!

Date: 2005-12-15 03:49 am (UTC)Unfortunately, the way it is set up with the mortgage company, we had to pay him one-third to start, and then we are to pay another third halfway through, and the remainder at the end. He can't purchase the materials without the initial outlay. But the cost of the windows was more than he had originally estimated, which is why the extra $400.
So we're rather stuck.
