Overall thoughts/Leitmotif: I wrote less this year. I really need to do something about that. Leitmotif? Genealogy. I've spent a good deal of time exploring in the upper branches of the Hobbit Family Trees this year.
My best story of this year: Trotter
My favourite story of this year: Trotter
Story of mine most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: It's not strictly speaking, fic, but I thought my Hobbit Name essay would get a little more attention than it did.
Most fun story to write: Well, mostly my stories are fun to write. Perhaps "The Family Way" or "Interlude in Buckland".
Story with the single sexiest moment: As always, this question makes me cackle.
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: As does this one.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: "Ancestress", most especially my ideas about Gandalf…
Hardest story to write: As it always was: "The Road to Edoras". I am so grateful to
ficfinishing for the chance to get that FINALLY complete!
Favorite OC: Hildifons Took, followed closely by Arathorn. (Strictly speaking not *entirely* OCs, as JRRT gave them names, but no personalities.)
Biggest Disappointment: That I did not get started on "In the Court of the High King". But I want to have a lot more done on that before I get started posting. I do not want another WIP taking me nearly five years to finish.
Biggest Surprise: "Ancestress". I had no idea that was ever going to be more than a bit of hinted-at backstory, or that it would lead to me looking at Frodo and Bilbo in the West.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story: I'm not sure. This one's a hard one for me each year.
Stories I haven't yet written, but intend to: The sequels to "A New Reckoning" and "The Road to Edoras". One of them continues the story of the hobbit delegation: "In the Court of the High King", and the other deals with the year of Cado Banks's punishment: "Cado's Year". Also, a fic about Gandalf's first encounter with hobbits. And my LotR/Narnia crossover.
Favorite 5 Opening Line(s):
It's an utter disgrace, Mungo! I do not see how you can allow it!" "The Family Way"
Frodo stopped at Gandalf's side, and gazed upward. The Tower of Avallónë was every bit as tall as the Tower of Ecthelion in the Citadel at Minas Tirith-- and it was white. But there the resemblance ended. This tower was smooth as glass, and though it was day, it gleamed like moonlight. "Comfort and Joy"
I cast an eye over my flock. "To Wait for Sun's Returning" (I love the idea of Gandalf as shepherd.)
Frodo Gamgee stood respectfully at his post in the Queen's antechamber. Through the window he could see the bright blue of the spring sky, not a cloud to be seen, and cool breezes brought to him the smells of the garden: newly-turned earth, and freshly cut grass, and the fragrance of primroses and bluebells, violets and lilacs. How he longed to be out there, grubbing in the dark soil, planting seeds or transplanting bedding plants. If he were at home in Bag End, that's where he'd be right now, at his father's side. "Hark! How Blithe the Throstle Sings!"
“Missus Lily!” Marigold burst into the Cotton’s kitchen with Rose at her heels.
Rose saw her mother look around from her cleaning, with a startled and annoyed expression on her face. “Bless me, lasses! You did make me jump! What news could possibly be worth such a pother?”
It was Marigold who answered. Rose’s mind was elsewhere, as she remembered how bold she had been earlier in the day. If her mother ever knew how she had kissed Sam like a shameless hussy, there would be a pother, sure enough! But she couldn’t have borne to let Sam go off and not let him know how it stood for her-- that she’d wait for him, no matter what! "Taking the Cake"
Favorite 5 Closing Line(s):
He glanced over at his wife, who giggled and said, "I don't believe 'Bertha' is at all suitable. So I suppose it will have to be the other name we decided on."
He grinned. His son. "Hello, Bilbo Baggins," he said. "One Fine Autumn Day"
"Well, all I got to say then, is thank goodness you're home again amongst sensible folks!" "Somewhat Better Than Ironmongery"
Pippin came and sat beside him, and marveled at the little brown book. For a while, they perused it together. "Just think of all his adventures!" said Pippin at last. "But he never got to go home."
Bilbo took Pippin's hands and closed them over the book. "He can now. Take his words back to the Shire, Peregrin, back to the Green Hills of Tookland that he missed for so many years. It is time for Hildifons Took to go home." "Trotter"
Frodo grinned up at the throstle in the poplar. He felt quite as blithe and happy as the bird did."Hark! How Blithe the Throstle Sings!"
Down the streets of Edoras, and out the gates, the cheering crowd was left behind. Freddy turned and looked back at the city of Edoras as it grew smaller in the distance. Then he looked forward once more, straightening up on his pony and taking a deep breath. What wonders awaited them all now, in the court of the High King?
Favorite 5 Line(s) from Anywhere:
“My name is Mirimë. Tûk called me ’Adamanta’; but you may call me ‘Grandmother’.”
Gandalf’s laughter rang out. "Ancestress"
"What did you think of what Lady Mirimë told us?" Frodo asked, for Bilbo had not yet said anything of their guest at all.
Bilbo turned and grinned at him. "She's a very attractive hobbitess, don't you think? Did you notice her eyes?"
A saucer slipped from Frodo's grasp and smashed upon the floor as he gaped at Bilbo, dismayed.
Bilbo laughed heartily. "Oh blessed stars, Frodo! You should have seen your face. I was only pulling your foot hair-- she's our great-grandmother, for goodness' sake!" "Ancestress"
"But he was so dashing and handsome and charming-- I knew he'd never look twice at me if he knew I was only twenty-four."
"Of course he was dashing, handsome and charming! He's a Took! "The Family Way"
Merry rolled his eyes, and glanced at Pippin. “ ‘It’s Frodo Baggins!’" he mocked. "You sounded completely daft, Pippin!” "Interlude in Buckland"
"Well," said Frodo, "I think that particularly scruffy looking drake over there should be named...Lotho!"
Merry's jaw dropped, and then he giggled. "Frodo! You are not supposed to say things like that."
"Says who?"
"Well-- the grown-ups."
Frodo leaned down conspiratorially and whispered "Do you see any grown-ups?" "A Golden Summer Afternoon"
Top 5 Scenes from Anywhere You Would Choose to Have Illustrated:
Young Frodo and wee Merry, feeding the ducks in "A Golden Summer Afternoon"
This scene in "On the Evening of Frodo's Fifth Birthday": Bilbo smiled, and helped Frodo to settle into his arms. The little hobbit in his nightshirt and his blue dressing-gown smelled of rosemary soap and his dark curls were still damp from his bath. He snuggled into Bilbo's embrace and handed the book to him. Bilbo opened the book, and gently guided Frodo's thumb away from his mouth. As of today, Frodo was no longer a faunt.
This scene with young Frodo and wee Pippin in "Just Looking": “Let me see! Oh, it’s only a nasty splinter.” He took Pippin up, and crossed to sit in Bilbo’s comfortable old armchair with the child in his lap. He took Pippin’s chubby little finger, and squeezed it lightly, and then quickly nipped the splinter between his fingers and drew it out. Then he held up the finger to his lips and gave it a kiss. “There, now is it all better?”
Bergil's reunion with his father Beregond, in "The Road to Edoras".
Longshanks talking with the injured Hildifons after the Rangers rescue him from the brigands in chapter six of "Trotter".
