This was nice! I liked it very much! A lovely portrait, especially the last little bit with Pippin. I so love to watch him 'coming of age'--in spirit if not in years. :)

Thank you! I love little snippets like this, and to explore the various permutations of friendship between the four. And so Sam gets to realize, that, yes, Pippin has "come of age" even if he has not "Come of Age". LOL!

I really liked the way you told this in Sam's vernacular and from his POV, but in third person.

Of course he'd feel a bit odd being the one protected, but what a testament to the maturity and skills of Merry and Pippin!

I often do a POV in third person. It allows me to step back just a bit if I need to get outside the person's head, but to still mostly stay there. I only very rarely write in true first person.

Yes, it would feel odd, to have the customary order change--yet Sam is able to see, that yes, Pippin is the protector now.
