Date: 2006-03-08 03:10 pm (UTC)I think Merry's farewell must have been the most painful. Sam, at least, had the hope of one day joining Frodo, and Pippin would grieve mightily, but his closeness to Frodo was not the same as Merry's, who'd known him intimately from birth.

(Sorry I can't recreate the strike-out...) This is just a great description--not only the physical aspects of of the empty room, but the emotional ones as well. And the simplicity of it, in Child Merry's syntax, makes it all the more powerful. I enjoyed reading this very much!
What a treasure trove of story ideas Frodo must have left in that box! :)
