Fun stuff in the mail
Nov. 22nd, 2014 08:50 pmYesterday the letter carrier was very good to me. Last week I ordered THIS T-shirt in the long-sleeved version, in dark blue. It was in the mailbox yesterday, along with another surprise.
About a month ago I took part in a survey put on by OSU, mostly stuff about politics and the environment. I'd completely forgotten about it, but they'd promised me a $10 Visa gift card. That showed up yesterday as well.
Today we went to Stillwater for some necessary errands, and I wore my new tee, and we went out to breakfast at IHOP, and I spent my Visa card at JoAnns (I got a book on Zentangle and a ball of variegated cotton yarn for dishcloths.) I had a 40% off coupon, so even though I went just a few dollars over the ten, both items combined were still $5 less than the book by itself would have been!
Then we did a little wandering around some second-hand and antique stores to find a new end table and lamp for the living room. We found a great table--a really nice Ethan Allen piece with a drawer and a shelf, for only $40, and they had hankies! I picked up two nice ones, one a floral print border, the other one with white on white embroidery, for only $3 apiece! No luck on a lamp yet, though.
Does anyone else on my flist use hankies instead of Kleenex or other tissue? I really prefer them--they are soft and environmentally friendly! Plus, they make me feel hobbity. I have several. A few bandanas and some nice old fashioned ladies' handkerchiefs. The two I got today give me an even half-dozen.

Date: 2014-11-23 07:01 am (UTC)My friend, who is 94 is always grumbling at me for using tissues rather than handkerchiefs, but as I sneeze a lot I'd spend all day doing washing if I didn't use tissues!

Date: 2014-11-23 02:15 pm (UTC)As to the handkerchief issue, someone I knew during my childhood turned me off them. I won't go into the messy details on that but I'll just say after knowing this person, I am a fan of tissues.
My grandmother always carried one though, usually she tucked it into a pocket or sometimes pushed it up the end of her sleeve. It rarely showed but if she needed it, you'd see her pull it out of her sleeve and then put it back.

Date: 2014-11-23 02:18 pm (UTC)Yes, indeed! I always have one stuffed into a coat pocket or my purse during the colder months especially. I find that they're easier on my skin, too. Mine are all basic, no flowers, no frippery. :^)
Love the T-shirt! Speaking of fannish apparel, I've been hankering after a black hoodie with the "Sons of Alchemy Middle-earth" design featured in my icon. Still haven't found the justification to spend the $.

Date: 2014-11-23 03:18 pm (UTC)I love the T-shirt. It came from a site called "Redbubble", which has just thousands of lovely geeky designs, not just LotR or TH, but all sorts of things like Doctor Who, Buffy, GoT, SPN, and tons of other fandoms, even some crossover tees. (I love one of the TARDIS that has the caption "Not all who wander are lost".
It came with a cute detachable tag that said: "Welcome to your splendid new body covering. Created just for you by the visual magician highlighted on the other side and carefully constructed in America by happy people wearing matching socks. What's not to love?"
As for the expense, my old long sleeved tees are totally wearing out, what with the cuffs and neckbands fraying and tiny terrier-induced tooth-holes all over them. Wearing the same ones over and over during the cold-weather months for seven or more years will do that. So, since I needed them anyhow, I decided I might as well get something I really like. I'll probably order a couple more, and put a couple on my Christmas list for the DH.

Date: 2014-11-23 04:17 pm (UTC)I use tissues. I know they're not as sound environmentally, but I prefer something that lets me toss away the possible source of infection.

Date: 2014-11-23 09:04 pm (UTC)There is that. But of course, I launder them in hot water. And if I do have a really bad cold with a drippy nose, I do give in and use tissues.

Date: 2014-11-24 03:08 am (UTC)My DH has always used a bandana or handkerchief for the most part. So a few years ago I decided to try them too. They are so soft, they dry out and don't disintegrate like tissues, and they are environmentally friendly. Also, if you forget and leave one in your pocket when you do the laundry, you don't end up with little bits of paper mache all over all your clothes!
