Christmas

Well, I'm still not feeling completely up to snuff, but felt better enough to have a decent Christmas.

I did not make a big Christmas dinner. The ham we bought a month ago is still tucked away in the big freezer on the porch. But we did have steak and waffles (not homemade this year, since our waffle iron broke a few months back and we never got to replace it. While not as good as homemade, they weren't bad, especially accompanied by some nice NY strip steaks).

Things were smaller on the present front. I got the DH a new flannel shirt, a new Dremel moto-tool, and a Hot Logic Mini plus a converter so he can plug it in to his car.

I got four items from my wish list: The complete and unabridged audio books of The Silmarillion, the soundtrack for The Hobbit:TBO5A, and two books--Splintered Light by Verlyn Flieger and Walking With Frodo by Sara Arthur. (He also ordered me two other books, but they won't be in for another month, due to being out of stock.)

Best of all, we FINALLY got to go see The Hobbit:TBO5A! I have to say I was very pleased with the end result! I'm not going to go into any spoilery review type thing tonight, but just say that it was a worthy ending to something I had a few reservations about going in! And now I can finally read all those posts I've been avoiding for a week!

But probably not until tomorrow. I am still feeling under the weather, and so will be turning in now.

Yes, they were all nice gifts! I'm eager to see the remaining books when they arrive as well.

I completely concur. I was rather wary going in, and then I ended up being incredibly happy with it. ♥ Shall probably write up a review once I've seen it a couple more times, heh. Glad you enjoyed it!

Yes, it's been on my wish list for a few years now! I was so glad to get it--I really thought the cost would put it beyond what I could get.

I'm glad you enjoyed BoTFA and moreover felt good enough to go. I think most of us went into seeing that on tiptoes, worrying about what to expect!

After DOS, I think a lot of us were wary. I have to confess I was much less wary once they had released "The Last Goodbye"--that made me feel more hopeful. I'm kind of glad I waited until I was feeling better to go, though. I am not sure I would have been well enough to appreciate it before yesterday.

I know you've been very sick. My cousin and her partner were feeling better in time for our Christmas dinner; they had had a really bad accident two weeks ago but thankfully they are on the mend. No one in the family likes ham except my cousin Bobby so my mom and I split the cost of a beef tenderloin. She almost overcooked it but it still turned out okay.

Well, we are probably going to save the ham for New Years.

Our big tradition, though, is Christmas breakfast. I missed making my own waffles, but we still had it! The frozen ones were not half-bad, and the steaks were yummy. We also had hash browns and eggs, so it was really good. We never need to eat lunch on Christmas day, we are still full from breakfast.

We went to the matinee of the movie, so when we got home we just had a simple supper of soup.

You found audio of the Silmarillion? I've searched for that for a while now. I can't seem to force myself to read it but I thought maybe I could listen to someone else read it. lol So far, I've not seen it anywhere.

The DH ordered it for me from Amazon. The price was still a little expensive, but not nearly so much as in previous years.

What is Splintered Light about?

Splintered Light is about the relationship between Tolkien's languages and the Silm and through the Silm the other books.

I've only barely started it, and already know I'm going to love it.

Here's a quote: "The alternation between the vision of hope and the experience of despair--between light and dark--is the essence of both Tolkien and his work. The contrast and interplay of light and dark are essential elements of his fiction."

Well, I am scheduled to work a four-hour shift today, so I guess I will find out how recovered I am. I'm supposed to work 10-2; if I can make it, I must be better.
