Non-musical earworm...

I almost always have an earworm going. There is not a time when I don't have a song or jingle or something repeating itself over and over in my head. Today it was a poem that I once knew by heart. It was triggered by seeing not one, but three different turtles trying to get to the other side of the road.

Anyway, here it is, so other people can get it stuck in their heads. Share the joy! *evil grin*

The Little Turtle

There was a little turtle.
He lived in a box.
He swam in a puddle.
He climbed on the rocks.

He snapped at a mosquito.
He snapped at a flea.
He snapped at a minnow.
And he snapped at me.

He caught the mosquito.
He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow.
But he didn't catch me.

Such a cute poem, been a favorite from childhood. (Though I usually forget the poet's name.)

And they used it in Story Time a few weeks ago at my library, along with the hand motions.

Vachal Lindsay wrote lots of great children's poems.

As a little kid, I spent hours with my favorite reads, which were my orange-covered Childcraft volumes of poetry. Tons of favorites in those books with the charming illustrations. I still have them and sometimes will pick them up to revisit my childhood.

I think I remember hearing that when I was very small, when teachers would read aloud to their classes.

I didn't know he wrote that!

He grew up in Springfield, IL - just a 30 min. drive south of where I live - and moved back not too long before he died.

I went to a writing event, getting inspired by nature, at the Springfield Audubon Society Nature Center a couple of years ago that was held by the Vachel Lindsay Society in Springfield.

He was very talented. There were a number of his poems in those volumes.
