Our Halloween
Nov. 1st, 2016 10:38 pmWe had a terrific Halloween!
I spent most of the day putting up the finishing touches on my hobbit lass costume. Somehow I could not find my green outfit I made for Scot moot years ago, so I decided to refurbish one of my old SCA garb outfits. I took some garb I had made for a peasant woman, and raised the hem to calf length. The bodice was fine, and still fit me, as the lacing was never meant to completely come together. I made a new chemise for it from some pale blue fabric I had in my stash. I also knit a new pair of hobbit feet, which I hope to post pics of later (none of the pics showed them very well).
I had also lucked out a few weeks ago at a Halloween shop, finding a pair of pointy ear tips that did NOT require special glue to put on. I finished it off with one of my aprons--blue gingham. I folded the bodice part down behind the apron. I had almost everything done except the chemise and attaching the knitted part of the feet to the soles.
The DH spent the day with the last few decorations. We have a lot that we won't put out until Halloween afternoon, because they are either electrical or battery operated, or would be damaged by wind or rain if left out several days. We also wait until the last second to put out the glow sticks in pumpkins or other things.
One thing we wanted to try was something we'd seen on YouTube: using dry ice to create fog. So we took a short break to go up to the grocery store and pick up some dry ice. The experiment was a mixed result. It worked, but we soon realized we should have gotten a lot more of the dry ice. (We only bought a pound and a half, because if it didn't work, we didn't want to lose much money on it.) So we only got a little fog, and it didn't last very long. But next year...
Monday night I had made a big batch of homemade vegetable soup for supper with enough leftover to last for a few days, so I took the time to throw a skillet of cornbread in the oven, and we had soup-and-cornbread for supper. Our son came over and joined us for supper, and then went home to get his little stepdaughter and bring her over. Then the DH went out to turn on the lights and decorations and hand out candy to the early birds.
I went to put on my outfit, and it took a lot longer than I thought. For one thing, little Miss Bella thought the cord to my bodice was a playtoy. She kept bashing at it until I chased her out of the room and shut the door, but she had gotten it all tangled up. By the time I got my bodice laced up and put on my ears and feet, it was already way dark, so I didn't get to take any "before" pics of the yard.
I joined him on the front deck and we both handed out tons of candy. The kids love our decorations; some families come to our block especially because of them, since hardly anyone else on this block decorates. One little fellow was so cute--he was about two in a Ninja Turtle costume, and he wanted to investigate all the decorations in the yard. But he was a little afraid to come up the ramp. Once he got up to the deck, he was distracted by Mummy Dog and Mummy Thriller Dancer and Talking Butler and Talking Pumpkins. He nearly forgot to get any candy. His mom took several pictures.
Our son and little A. (who is four now) stayed with us until her mom got there, then they went to a few other houses before coming back. Our son and A. had made a jack o' lantern together, so he brought it over to put with our decorations. We lit it up with a couple of glow sticks. She was very proud of it, and showed some of the kids that came what she made.
We were afraid we wouldn't have enough candy, since we spent less this year, but we had plenty in spite of how many trick-or-treaters we had--in fact, we didn't run low until nearly 9:30! That's almost an hour past when we usually run out!
We were exhausted when we finished. We brought the animatronics and battery operated things inside the screened front porch, and came in and sat around for a while, and then the DH went to bed about 11, and I followed very shortly after.
Here is our house after dark last night! I think this was our best decorations ever for Halloween!

After breakfast this morning, I went out and put the things on the porch back out in roughly their original spots and took some pics.
This is how it looked in the daylight the next morning:

I hope all of you had as much fun last night as we did. I would have posted sooner, but it took a while to get all the pictures uploaded.

Date: 2016-11-02 12:54 pm (UTC)In previous years we've always run out of candy about 8:30, when only a few of the older stragglers were still out, but this year we still had candy and an occasional few people up until 9:30.

Date: 2016-11-02 12:58 pm (UTC)They are a little large, which I did on purpose, because my feet swell, but they were larger than I meant them to be anyway. Next year I will probably wear bulky socks with them.
There are a few pics of me taken by my husband and son, but none of them got my feet or my ears very well, and I have never had success with a selfie, LOL! But you can see them at my Flickr account.

Date: 2016-11-03 12:42 pm (UTC)I love your decorations. I wish I lived in an area where we did Halloween up right, but up here in the Frozen Northlands you never know from year to year what your weather and temperatures will be like.
