I'm Doomed
Jan. 5th, 2005 03:19 pmI'm writing this on my DH's laptop, because our big HP desktop froze up this morning. All the usual things didn't work, such as cut off the power and cut back on, so...
I finally got it where I could try "System Restore" but that just kept running me around in circles, so...
I tried "System Recovery" and it *seemed* to work at first, though I have a sinking feeling I have now lost all our files (eeeeeegggghhhh!!!!) which ( I know, I know ) were not backed up,because I had not yet figured out how, so....
Now it's telling me "Welcome to Microsoft Windows" and push next, and I can't get the damned mouse to work, so...
Now when DH gets home from work, he's not going to be a very happy camper, so...
I think I'm doomed.
At least I sent Marigold my Challenge 12 last week.

Date: 2005-01-06 11:21 am (UTC)I feel so sorry for you, I had a hard disk failure once, just after we restored a backup, deleted it and then it chrashed... again. I keep the faith for you!

Date: 2005-01-05 04:48 pm (UTC)That doesn't sound good.
If you ever have an issue like that, try powering off (unplugging will do) and then as the computer is just starting to boot, press F5 and hold it. (Or F8 on some machines). This will bring you to a boot menu. Chose the 'safe mode' boot option. This will bring you up into a rudimentary version of the operating system that should at least let you back up your files before you have to do a system restore.
I am hoping you haven't lost anything, but I must concur - backing up is the best option. If you have too much stuff to put it on a single CD, consider buying a second hard drive and putting that in your computer as your internal back up. Copying is quick because it's internal and unless you have a fire or really nasty virus, your files would be safe.

Date: 2005-01-06 07:33 am (UTC)My DH talked to tech support last night, and they told him it sounded like something called a "destructive recovery" and that it might have been a virus.
Believe me I've learned about back-ups! Learning how to do that is going to be #1 as soon as we get the blamed thing fixed!
