Regarding JRRT's Letters

I am looking for a particular passage that I *know* is somewhere in Letters, JRRT writes about how young hobbits in their late teens and tweens were known for their pilfering of larders and gardens, and how the adults more or less ignored it as just part of growing up...

Can someone point me to the particular Letter that is in?

I cannot point you to the letter. I only know that *my* hobbits pilfer the larders and berry beds even in their early teens :)

When I saw your reply last night, I was on the phone with Dana, and I hooted in her ear. That is *so* funny!

Seriously, "Letters" is wonderful! JRRT comes across as such a wonderful person, but not perfect. He's very crotchety and grumpy at times; at other times he is funny or heartbreaking or logical or mundane. And when he starts to talk about his work on LotR it is absolutey amazing. Especially the letters he wrote to Christopher...

I combed through it last night and looked up every page that had something about hobbits on it, but found nothing.

I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I saw it in HoME instead, or UT. *sigh* I'm not imagining it.

I know there is a part in the HoME where it says that hobbits indulged their children. I tried finding it last night but it was getting late. I'll look again tonight. :)

I would think 214 but it's more of hobbit customs and such...
i hope you find it soon! i'll look for you also when i have the time. :) (tried the appendix but Tolkien has LOTS of reference pages about hobbits ;)

I thought 214 as well, but no. I tried the appendix too, but I'm sure I missed some things. I may have to start slogging through it from the beginning...
