Oct. 5th, 2006 02:38 pmI'm on the DH's laptop. Thank goodness he didn't take it with him out of town, because my own computer is seriously possessed...
Okay, lately, if I turn it off, when I turn it back on I get the black screen that says "windows did not start" and to either hit "Last Known Configuration" or "Start Windows Normally". I usually have to go through that several times before it comes up,(as between 12 and 40 times) and then it's USUALLY all right as long as I don't shut it off. Except I've also had it freeze up on me, or shut down unexpectedly more often than normal. Norton *says* I don't have a virus, but I don't know what else would do this.
This morning I had fits getting it to come up, and it wouldn't stay up longer than just a few minutes before it would either freeze or shut down. I finally got it up, and thought it was going to stay, so I sent myself a bunch of emails to *this* computer, just in case. I can work on the laptop a little bit, but there's a lot of files I still don't have access to on this.
Anyway mine's down again, and I am very perplexed. I guess I'll have to call tech support. *sigh*
But right now I'll just use the laptop.

Date: 2006-10-06 03:10 am (UTC)I'm so horrible with technology. *sigh*
Anyway, it came on this evening spontaneously. I don't think it's supposed to do *that* either...
But it's running--for the moment.

Date: 2006-10-06 12:34 am (UTC)If "Last Known" doesn't work, next time you get it up and running try <a href="http://housecall.trendmicro.com/>Trend Micro's free online virus scanner</a> it will sometimes catch things that Norton doesn't. If Trend Micro says it doesn't find any viruses, then your processor may be over heating. You'd have to take it in to a shop for that. If that's the case, it might be a faulty processor or just the little fan that cools it. The little fan is relatively cheap and easy to replace, the processor might be a bit more pricey.

Date: 2006-10-06 12:37 am (UTC)Meant to say try Trend Micro's Free Online Virus scanner "Housecall". It sometimes finds stuff Norton's can't.
If Housecall doesn't find anything, it might be that your processor is over heating. If that's the case, you need to take it into a shop! If it's just the fan, then that won't cost too much.

Date: 2006-10-07 03:01 am (UTC)We downloaded a free program, "Adaware", and run it regularly. You'd be amazed how much stuff accumulates, in cookies, on your hard drive. Eventually it'll affect your computer's operation.
