Summary: Gandalf visits an old friend…(a drabble)

R: LIKE A RADIANT RADAGAST

Gandalf stopped and watched the figure in brown: brown robes, bushy brown hair and beard, bright brown eyes twinkling in a rugged brown face. Yet it glowed, with a golden radiance, as Radagast stood over the ruins of Dol Goldur, where already vines had begun to insinuate their greenness among the stark and broken rubble. Radagast flung out an arm, and a sparrow flew down to perch upon a finger. He turned and smiled.

“Greetings, brother.”

Gandalf inclined his head. “You are not coming home with me,” he said sadly.

“Your work is finished, old friend. Mine has just begun.”

This has a melancholy tone to it and yet I cannot help to feel happy for Radagast.

Yes, for Gandalf's sad that he'll not have his friend's company for a while, but you are right: Radagast is glad that his time has come.

Incidentally, Gandalf in The Hobbit refers to Radagast as his cousin. I know that JRRT wrote this long before he had decided that the wizards were actually Ainur, but I still wonder about it. Does he just mean that Radagast is a fellow wizard, or are the two of them actually cousins "in the mind of Ilúvatar," the way that, e.g., Manwë and Melkor are brothers?

It was a medieval custom for equals to refer to themselves as "brother" or "cousin"--European royalty did it all the time--even when they weren't related. I think that's probably the tradition JRRT had in mind--I know that's what I was thinking of.
