Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

It doesn't have to be anything complex - it can be feedback for a fanwork or discussing something you might have in common or even simply admiring their icon. The point is to reach out to someone you normally wouldn't and connect with them, even if it's only for the briefest moment.

This is a wonderful time of year to have this particular challenge, because there are all sorts of lovely stories by new people on Yuletide; it was there I found this gem to comment on!

OK, there are dozens of great people I've come to know over the years in this fandom; all of them are creators in some sense of the word, most of them fanfic writers. Some are artists, or create other sorts of great things for fandom. Many of them I think of as good friends, and there are a number of them I've met in real life. All of them are dear to me. Some of them I interact with frequently as co-mods or fellow members of various communities.

But one person jumped to my mind first: shirebound. She was in the fandom before I was, and she always has a kind word for others. She will always give a helping hand and an encouraging virtual hug. She's a talented writer of stories that are always sweet, gentle, filled with love and total respect for Tolkien's work. I hope one day that I will get the chance to hug her in person.

I think by now, nearly everyone on my flist knows I am talking about shirebound.
