This was fun:

The ballad, I; I shun the world,    Its bustle and its noise, Its busy hasty rushing crowds    And bright consumer toys. Indeed, I sometimes like the old    Because it's not the new; And if you think that's strange or wrong,    I might not much like you. What Poetry Form Are You? It said I could also be heroic couplets! I'm so glad--I like structured poems. But the test was fun and kind of silly.

Ballad form isn't my favourite - it's OK as long as it limits itself to no more than ten verses. At the outside. It just tends to get carried away and go on for pages and pages and pages and pages and pa.....

But I do prefer poems with rhythm and rhyme. Unless they're short!

Did you have to learn poems when you were a little lass at school? Odd how they stick in your memory - and remain among your favourites despite the passage of years. Daffodils, Home Thoughts from Abroad, Sea Fever ...

Well, I can read the ones that go one for pages if they have a good story to tell, but not if they are simply waxing lyrical about the beauties of nature.

I much prefer structured poetry. It doesn't necessarily have to rhyme, though I tend to like that best, but it should have *rules*, and not be just prose with eccentric line breaks.

I do remember several I had to learn in kindergarten. Daffodils was one of them, and Only One Mother was another. But in the upper grades, they'd rather gotten away from memorization and reciting poetry--something I now regret.

I am heroic couplets; most precise And fond of order. Planned and structured. Nice. I know, of course, just what I want; I know, As well, what I will do to make it so. This doesn't mean that I attempt to shun Excitement, entertainment, pleasure, fun; But they must keep their place, like all the rest; They might be good, but ordered life is best.
