1 - What do you get out of LJ? Why are you here? How did you get here?
What do I get out of LJ? Well, I get to meet people from all over the world who share my interests. I come to know many of them, to the point that I think of them as friends, not merely virtual acquaintances. I’ve been lucky enough to meet some in RL, either on the phone or face-to-face; and since I moved away from my home of 30 years, and all the RL friends I had there, it’s where most of my social life is.
As to *why and how* I’m here, it’s because ofmarigoldg, who was visiting me. (I met her through her challenges, and SoA at first.) She told me I *really* *needed* an LJ; I told her I was pretty much a computer illiterate, but she helped me out by actually setting up my account for me. She even got me started by adding a nice long list of hobbity people to my friends page.
2- How do you see ...
a- Your LJ Past?
Mostly I thought of it as a place to post fics, and to read fics, and to obsess about hobbits.
I think the true turning point for how I viewed my LJ was Hurricane Katrina. First of all, being cut off for nearly a month made me aware of how much I missed everyone; and when I returned and found all the outpouring of love and support that had been sent my way, and all the worrying that had been done on my behalf, I realized just what friends I really did have on LJ.
b- Your LJ Present?
Still, my main focus is fic, reading and posting; and hobbits--I have to say that hobbity people are probably the nicest people there are. I do make some personal posts, and am involved in some communities, do memes and so forth.
c- Your LJ Future?
I’d like to get more savvy about using my LJ. I rely mostly ondanachan for things like icons and posting pics, and whenever I have any technical troubles with formatting, I run screaming to her. It’d be nice not to have to pester her all the time, LOL, even though I know she doesn’t mind.
And I don’t plan on going anywhere. As long as there’s LJ, and a few people on my flist who still love hobbits, I will be here as long as I have a computer. (Or unless something happens to LJ.)
3 – Give us your thoughts on Filters. How do you use them? If you say for Coffee, I get to kill you.
I’ve never really figured them out. Dana’s kindly set one up so she can help me out privately when I have technical trouble; but she’s tried to explain them to me, and I really don’t get it. (See Question 2c)
4 – Tell us about your Friending/Unfriending policy. Why do you do it? (BITCH!) Or why do you not? (WUSS-ASS!)
I would say “wuss”. I still have a great many people on my flist thatmarigoldg put there that probably don’t post anymore. And I’ve added a heap more people than I’ve unfriended. I really *should* trim my flist, but I have this horrible fear of accidentally unfriending someone I meant to keep and hurting their feelings. I have unfriended a few people who deleted their journals, and a few duplicate LJs--people who have more than one, so I just take the one they don’t use much off.
a - Conversely, if you get surprised by Joule, do you want to know why the axe fell on you? Does it hurt, even when expected? Could you care less?
Uh--would it be horrible to say, I probably don’t notice? Honestly, unless it’s someone whom I interact with a *lot* (I can think of some people I’d miss immediately) I wouldn’t know, would I? Not unless I made a point of checking all the time, which I don’t.
5 – Privacy Issues anyone? Is your journal an open, welcoming Disney castle or is it a dark fortress encircled by a moat filled with zombie piranha?
Well, I used to never flock anything, but now I do flock most posts that deal with more personal matters. If any of my family ever decide to join LJ, then I would probably lock a lot more posts, and learn how to use the darn filters. I have gone back and private-locked a few personal rants in the past, just in case anyone I know in RL should come across them.
But I’m probably more open on the ‘net than I should be. I don’t think anyone would be interested in stalking me or stealing my identity, but if they were, my dinky little precautions wouldn’t stop them. So I don't really even try.
6 – Would you be eager to meet your LJ pals out in the real world? Or would you rather die the Death of a Thousand Cuts?
I *love and adore* to meet my friends in RL! So far, I’ve only met two in person--marigoldg and coneygoil, but I’ve spoken to danachan (like everyday two or three times a day) and grey_wonderer and lindelea1 and gryffinjack on the phone. And I do hope *crosses fingers* to meet a lot more of you at the Tolkien Moot in Scotland this fall.
7 – Your commenting rules and regulations for yourself. Itchy typing finger? You can’t be bothered?
I love to comment--though I don’t comment on every single post, I do try. And I also try to reply to anyone who comments to me--though sometimes that gets away from me, timewise.
8 – How do you prefer people would comment to you? With honesty? All ♥ and roses? Do you warm your hands at the Flames with a smile on your face?
I do like honesty, but *polite* honesty, please. A bit of snarkiness won’t put me in tears, though if it were from an unexpected source, it might sting.
I’ve never been flamed, nor have I ever flamed anyone. That said, I sometimes like to lurk on the flamewars of others--they can be extremely amusing.
9 – Do you like it when your f-list shares your hobbies and passions? (YAY, LOTR and ONLY LOTR! Keep our lists pure!) Or do you hate it when everyone’s interests begin to splinter and you don’t know who/what the hell they’re talking about? (Win...who? Due where? What gate? What’s all this Japanese stuff? Dark Shadows?! )
Well, I like it *best* when everyone’s all about the hobbits and LotR, of course, but I don’t mind hearing a bit about other fandoms. A few of them interest me enough to give a look at, and some of them are things I like as well--Harry Potter or Star Wars or Star Trek or Stargate or Dr. Who--though I’m not truly *fannish* about them. Other things, like anime, don’t interest me at all, though I’m glad other people enjoy them.
I also love to read about my flists’ personal lives--their significant others, their kids, their pets, their hobbies and their jobs. It makes me feel I’m getting to know them better. And I have a few communities and interests that are non-LotRish--SCA, FlyLady,calligraphy etc. so I have some friends *that* way.
It *does* disappoint me a tad when someone takes up a new fandom and *drops* LotR altogether in favor of the new --I’m all about the old Girl Scout song: “Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold…” I mean, just because someone loves Dr. Who doesn’t mean they can’t still love LotR! But I always just harbor the hope that when the shiny wears off the new one, they will come back to the OTFandom, LOL! And if I have enough of a flist history with them, I’ll still enjoy reading their posts.
10 – Do you like your F-list to be enthusiastic about the artistic endeavors that you share or can you putter happily along without feedback?
I have to confess, if I post something I’ve written or made, and get little to no feedback on it, even from those who do so regularly, it does sting a little. But usually I put it down to people either missing the post or lack of activity or poor timing. I don't jump to the conclusion that suddenly nobody loves me, LOL!
11 – CONFLICT! To be avoided like Gonorrhea or to be faced with your finger out (and sometimes up?)
Depends on what the conflict is. If I can politely engage in debate with someone, I will do so--I love a good argument, in the *formal* sense, and like the give and take of logic and evidence--I was in debate club in HS! But if someone turns nasty or gets personal, I tend to drop out. I don’t like taking things down to that level.

1. Why do you write fanfic? Who are you writing for?
Well, I write fanfic because I found out I *could*! Also because I have this insatiable craving for more hobbits, that can’t be satisfied in canon, and because I read too fast.
Mostly, I try to write the sorts of stories I want to read: gen, with strong friendships, and book-based, so in that way, I suppose I’m writing for myself--but that’s not really true, because I thrive on the review/reply process--I’m a review hog, and I love replying to feedback almost as much as writing fic in the first place. It’s the idea of engaging with people who love what I love.
And I also love to write stories for particular people who have their own cravings, such as h/c about their favorite hobbit, for example; and I really love challenges--a prompt or a starter sentence to send me in a direction I may never have otherwise thought to go, or that is the final impetus for a bunny that’s been bugging me.
2. Do you always have your fic betaed before you post?
Short answer: No. Very seldom.
Long answer--sometimes. It all depends on what the fic is, how long it is, and who its meant for.
3. Do you post works in progress?
Yes.
4. Do social relationships with other writers influence whether you read and give feedback?
Absolutely. I will make it a point to give feedback to the people whom I know best--but that’s probably what I’d do anyway. If I “know them best” it’s because they are the ones who write what I like the most anyway. It’s sort of a cycle.
That said, I will always leave FB for any fic I’ve read and enjoyed. I just might not be as detailed.
5. Do you like LiveJournal as a place to post fic?
Yes; it’s lovely to have LJ to post in, although I also usually repost almost everything in my favorite archives as well.
6. Do you like LiveJournal comments as a form of feedback for fic?
Absolutely. It’s immediate, for one thing--usually I will have FB within *minutes* of posting.
I do notice however that LJ feedback is often not as meaty or detailed as that which I get at the archive.

And, what's worse, I don't know about my finances. Oh, I would so love to at least come by and say hi. You don't happen to be anywhere close to Aberdeen?

Reviews are a great motivator and I always feel a little discouraged when a story I worked on hard only gets little acknowledgment. But, in fact, I write for me - what I like to read and what comes to me easily.

I think a lot of times I have ideas, things I want to say about my characters and their relationships, but it's more difficult for me to come up with a plot to fit those with on my own, and the prompts help me out with that.

Yes, this is a sad thing for me too. I want to be happy for people when they find new things to get excited about but sometimes it does worry me if it seems like the first sign that they might be giving up on the hobbits, especially they're writers whose fic I enjoy.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! I enjoyed reading these. (And I like the other meme too. Unfortunately I can't pick a favorite entry from my own LJ, but it is a cool idea.)
