Date: 2007-05-22 03:35 am (UTC)1. After her mother’s death, shortly before Drogo came of age, she took charge of her father’s household during his declining health; she also lived with her brother Dudo and his wife, and helped to raise her niece Daisy.
2. She once had a suitor, but it did not work out--he had an ailing mother, and she had her father to take care of. She never returned the regard of any other hobbit after that.
3. She was very fond of young Folco, and quite proud of his musical talent--in spite of the trouble his mouth often got him into.
4. While she always publicly disapproved of Bilbo’s Adventure, secretly she admired him. And though they often disagreed over the importance of propriety, they were very fond of one another.
5. Her book, published four years before her death, was more than just a modest success. Copies of it were in great demand in the Shire, and she was often quoted. She wrote it, by the way, at Frodo’s suggestion and encouragement. He thought that writing it would keep her too busy to interfere in *his* life.

Date: 2007-05-22 03:36 am (UTC)1. Merry seems to be all Brandybuck, and he does take a good deal after his father’s side of the family. But he has more Tookishness in him than he usually cares to admit. Though it doesn’t manifest itself quite as clearly as it did for Frodo and Pippin, he has his own share of prescience and foresight.
2. He was very precocious; partially this was his native intelligence, but also due to Frodo, who started teaching him to read at the very young age of five. His keeping company constantly with Frodo made him try to keep up with his older cousin.
3. He has a tendency to be a bit obsessive about things from time to time. If he gets busy at a job, he will see to every little detail of it until it’s finished--or until his cousins can distract him.
4. He’s been a friend of Sam since Frodo first moved into Bag End.
5. While he likes to think of himself as practical and level-headed, he is secretly quite the romantic.

Date: 2007-05-22 03:36 am (UTC)1. Clodio was often jealous of Eglantine as a child and youth--she was far more personable and likeable than he was, and had more friends.
2. He once hoped to make a match with Paladin’s sister Primrose, though he never truly tried to pursue it. He was not in love with her, but he thought such a marriage would be beneficial to him. But he found that he could not get Beryl off his mind.
3. After the rift between him and Eglantine due to his son’s actions in “The Dare”, he attempted to keep her from seeing their mother, who lived with him. He never knew that when his mother was on her deathbed, Beryl sent for Eglantine behind his back.
4. When he and Dago were approached by Lotho about financing his takeover of the Shire, he was eager to participate, as he thought that toppling the Tooks would help the Banks to advance in status.
5. He never quite understood his older son--that what he took for youthful high spirits and just “being a lad” actually was the personality of a bully. He was often “proud” of his older son for “asserting himself” and getting his way.

Date: 2007-05-22 03:37 am (UTC)1. Éomer was helped in his pursuit of Lothiriel by his correspondence with Merry.
2. He harbors hopes of doing a bit of matchmaking for his cousin Éothain. And Éowyn will help him.
3. Although he invited his Aunt Eormangilda to come be his chatelaine, a role she once fulfilled for his Uncle, he is slightly intimidated by her.

Date: 2007-05-22 03:38 am (UTC)1. Bilbo met Elves when he was only a baby.
2. He was quite a rascal in his youth. His best friends were his Took cousins Sigismond and Adalgrim, and they often found mischief to get into when they were together.
3. Bilbo was at one time the tutor for most of the Baggins family. His Adventure put an end to that. He missed being a teacher, and was so glad to resume that role when he adopted Frodo.
4. After his Adventure, Bilbo met Gildor and his Elves several times in the Woody End. On at least two such occasions, Frodo was with him.

Date: 2007-05-22 01:04 pm (UTC)The basics are usually taught by a parent or older sibling, but among the gentry, once a child reaches proficiency in reading, writing and arithmetic, more advanced lessons are often taken on by an older uncle or cousin who has a scholarly bent--Bilbo was family tutor for most of the Baggins connections in Hobbiton; in Brandy Hall, Frodo's uncle Dinodas filled that spot. There were a good few such uncles and cousins among the Tooks, including Bilbo's good friend Siggy.
Lessons in more specialized areas, such as art or music are also taken on by relatives: Frodo had his art lessons from his Cousin Calla when in Brandy Hall; Pippin learned fiddle from Esmeralda, lap harp from his Aunt Peridot, and bagpipes from Cousin Ferdinand.
Among working class hobbits, apprenticeships were very frequently done under relatives of one sort or another.

Date: 2007-05-22 03:39 am (UTC)1. Even though Pippin was premature, and had a few serious illnesses as a very young child, and was prone to having his colds develop into lung infections, he outgrew that before the time he entered his tweens. However, it left his family very cautious of his health, to his consternation.
2. Pippin loved music from a very early age. Even before he could talk, he would sing.
3. Pippin’s very fond of his older Aunties, Primrose and Peridot, but he shares a special closeness with his Aunt Peridot. And he adores his Aunt Esme to distraction.
4. Pippin harbored a secret wish that Frodo would marry Pearl. However, Merry forbade him to do any matchmaking.
5. Pippin is an extremely shrewd and intuitive judge of character--it is in that which his Tookish side really shows itself--and it gives him something very much in common with Aragorn and Faramir.

Date: 2007-05-22 03:40 am (UTC)1. Mistress Poppy was the Took family healer when they still lived in Whitwell. She moved to the Great Smials at Eglantine and Paladin’s request, when they did.
2. She once had a brief period of time with no apprentice. It was very difficult for her, so she has made it a point ever since to get a new one before the old one’s apprenticeship is over.
3. She is totally absorbed in her work; it is that which drew her to volunteer to go South--the idea of learning new and better ways of healing.
4. When she herself was an apprentice, she had a suitor who was particularly persistent. She wasn’t interested in him, but she really had a hard time turning him away.

Date: 2007-05-22 01:07 pm (UTC)1. Diamond is the youngest of her family; she has two older sisters, Sapphire and Ruby. Her mother Chrysanthemum is widowed, and her great-aunt Hepatica lives with the family.
2. Her greatest childhood influence was her father’s sister, her Aunt Jewel, who was a healer. She had always hoped to apprentice with her aunt, but Jewel died suddenly before Diamond was old enough. Mistress Lavender had been a good friend of Jewel--at one point both Lavender and Jewel had been apprenticed to Mistress Salvia of Hobbiton. So Lavender took on Diamond’s apprenticeship in honor of her friend.
3. Growing up in a household dominated by females, Diamond sometimes feels a bit out of her depth when around a lot of lads. Her training as a healer helps her hide this, but she often feels out of her depth when dealing with males.
4. Diamond used her knowledge of herbs and as a healer to make sure that she and Pippin could start their family immediately--but she was a bit surprised by the twins!
Estella
1. Estella was very much pampered as a child. Her parents and older brother spoiled and protected her as the baby of the family. In spite of that, she is very strong and determined, though that often doesn’t show until she is pushed.
2. She loves stories; she was one of Bilbo’s and later Frodo’s, most avid listeners as a child. And Freddy found her a happy listener to the stories of Elves that *he* learned from Frodo. It was through telling stories that Merry won her heart.
3. She and Diamond hit it off immediately, and one of the happiest times of her life was when the two couples shared their home for several years after they first married Merry and Pippin.
4. She had a larger-than-life picture in her mind of Éowyn, and was pleasantly surprised, on meeting the Princess of Ithilien to find her so friendly and approachable.

Date: 2007-05-22 04:51 pm (UTC)Or Cado (although I doubt you'll tell his later life!)
Or Opal and the Jewels ...
And this is now the fourth time I've tried to add this. Which is partly why the list keeps getting longer!

Date: 2007-05-22 11:47 pm (UTC)1. Menelcar did have an apprentice/partner several years before he met Pippin. But his partner fell in love with a girl in Dale, and wanted to settle down, so Menelcar was on his own again.
2. After he left Pippin in the Shire, he thought to make his way to Rivendell, but never was able to locate it, so he travelled south again.
3. Menelcar was the Court Bard for most of the rest of his life. His last apprentice was his nephew.
4. He and Pippin kept up a lively regular correspondence over the years.
Cado
1. Cado always wished he’d had a younger brother or sister.
2. He has an (unrequited) crush on Viola Harfoot.
3. He has a certain amount of skill in sketching and drawing, but he was never able to take lessons, as he had no Banks relatives who could teach him.
Opal and her sisters
1. Opal will become the head healer for the Great Smials, and will work alongside Diamond through many of the inhabitants’ illnesses and injuries.
2. Amethyst eventually married, though she made her beau wait a long while; with the example of her parents before her, she was afraid she would not make a good wife or mother. Eglantine and Pearl were gradually able to make her see that she could be.
3. Garnet never married, but stayed with her father at the Great Smials and took care of him in his old age. She was much beloved by her niece and nephew. (Amethyst’s children)
