Hi, dreamflower! I know you from Marigold's challenges. One of her picks led me to this story "When Day is Done", and I just love the author. I've read quite a few of her other stories too.
I have a question for you. I've been reading a lot of your stories lately of SoA, and I greatly admire your writing. I was wondering, in case I write anything similar .. is it canon to have hobbits give birthday presents to the byrding up until noon of the birthday, or is that your creation? Also, were wedding gifts considered bad luck, or is that another creation of yours? I tell you, I can't remember where I've read something in the books, and when I've read it in your stories....LOL.
Thank you for your lovely stories. I'm waiting for the next installment of "The Road to Edoras".
I'm sure that Dana would love to hear from you how much you like her fic! I am really enthused over this one in particular, and not just because I was beta, but also because I think it is some brilliant writing.
As to your questions: the first part, about the birthday presents to the byrding until noon is quasi-canon, which is to say it came from JRRT himself in Letter #214, but it is not in LotR. He has quite a bit to say about gift-giving customs in that letter. The part about the wedding gifts is a bit different: he does say that it is considered really bad taste to give gifts at the wedding itself, and that gifts were given ahead of time, but it's my own fanon that many hobbits were superstitious about it and considered it bad luck. And the part about "sitting for the gifts" is also my own fanon. If you can possibly get hold of a copy of Letters, you really should read #214!
I've got the next chapter of RtoE, I just have a bit of editing and fine-tuning before I post it.
