To-ma-toes!

*grin* I had my first tomatoes off my plants tonight! Four little cherry tomatoes from the Sweet 100, and oh! weren't they sweet and juicy! Two for my salad, two for the DH.

I was so pleased, because after one of the thunderstorms the other night, the iron pole holding my buckets broke, dumping them on the ground!

The next day, the DH put some hooks into the eaves of the garage, and we hung them there. The plants looked a bit battered, but they have recovered nicely! I can't wait till the larger ones start getting ripe, too!

I was really intrigued by the photos you posted, with the plants coming out the bottom of the buckets. Is this a form of hydroponics? Or -- um -- something else?

We're growing Milady's tomato plants in big (maybe 30-gallon?) molasses tubs from her son's ranch. Each one is big enough to hold three big tomato plants and cages. The plants are producing very well, so she has tomatoes with supper almost every night.

At our house the varmints get the tomatoes, so we just buy from the farmer's market.

Oh yes! I'm just dying for the rest to start turning red!

It's not hydroponics--they are growing in soil, only upside down from a hole in the bottom of the buckets. It saves a lot of work as far as weeding, training up poles or cages, and also space. They really seem to like it!
