Well, I took part in the survey, and the guy emailed me, and wanted to ask me some more questions, so I did. Then he asked to set up a phone interview.

I just got off the phone after a delightful hour-and-a-half of unrestrained yammering about Tolkien, hobbits, fandom, hobbits, fic, hobbits (sounds a lot like my conversations with danae_b only without the giggling and squeeing!)--he was very courteous and asked some very good questions.

He's working on a book, as well as some smaller papers dealing with Tolkien and fandom.

That would be nice! I love it that someone is doing that kind of thing, and that I could be a little part of it.

He was really interested in various aspects of fandom, and especially in how fandom affected RL. And he asked a lot of questions about why Tolkien has such an appeal and so forth.

Yeah, he's a very nice man. I got in touch with him months ago and I still have more questions he asked me to answer, but family stuff kinda got in the way and setting up a phone call isn't so easy for me. Mine are, probably no surprise, mostly Silmarillion related ^-^

I was afraid I couldn't be very articulate on the phone, so declined the phone interview, but he sent me a long and detailed follow-up questionnaire. He seems like such a nice guy. I'm really glad your interview went well!

He's very nice! I told him up front I had bad phone reception, but except for some bursts of static, it behaved very well. That was my main worry about a phone interview. You would not believe how often Dana and I get dropped calls!

Thanks for reposting the link. I'd meant to go fill out the questionnaire weeks ago, but got busy and forgot. I rushed right over and did it this time. I hope it's not too late to be of some use. I don't think I said anything that interesting or new, but you never know. I know so many people who are much more knowledgable about Middle-Earth and all, that I can't imagine anyone seeking me out to ask questions of.:)

Just getting to share your love of the fandom sounds so cool.
