1. Actually, I believe that you were on the original friends list that marigoldg made for me, when she set up my LJ! She picked out some people she thought I'd like--and she was quite right on almost all of them.
2. Pippin, of course, and wee!hobbits.
3. I like your enthusiasm for things--you put a lot of that into your posts!
4. I remember the postcards we exchanged shortly before Katrina--I still have the one you sent me, and I was so glad that I had sent you a card from *before* all the destruction!

Well, I'd been seeing your name on comments and in communities so often that I actually *thought* I'd already friended you, and then one day I was on the phone with Dana, and she said something about your post--I was puzzled, since I hadn't seen it. She went to my user page, and then laughed and said I didn't have you friended. So I fixed it.

I was VERY new to the internet in 2001, but I knew how to "search". As soon as I saw FOTR the first few times I was dying to know if anyone out there was talking about it, and especially about Frodo, whom I had loved since the mid-1970's. I think I searched for "Tolkien stories" or "Lord of the Rings", and found fanfiction.net right off the bat. I read stories at that site (which hadn't been online that long) for months, before febobe started the Frodohealers Yahoo group. Hanging out with those folks inspired me to try to write something of my own.

I was young, actually. I think it was in grade school - second or third grade. My best friend had a tonsillectomy and I was really angry that she couldn't tell me how they'd done it. Between that and watching M*A*S*H I announced to my mother one day that I wanted to be Hawkeye Pierce. She asked if I meant Houlihan, that I wanted to be a nurse, and I said no, I didn't want to be the person handing the doctor tools I wanted to be the doctor.

Former military, likely about to relocate to Maine, and a surgeon, I guess you could say I got my wish. ;)

I feel a bit of a fraidycat right now, actually, heh.

Cockatiels...someone suggested a cockatiel once if I wanted a parrot that wasn't as loud and obnoxious as a regular parrot, and also more affordable. So that's when I got Khalil. And now I'm addicted! :-)

I think I knew Dana a little bit from the old frodo_slash Yahoo group. So I don't think I ran into her first on LJ. I can't remember who friended who first! Ancient history now since I think it was probably back in 2002 that it started :-)

4. I still have your postcard too - I have a small photo album where I keep all the postcards I received from that exchange. And I remember I kept looking at your postcard after Katrina hit and wondering if the beach in the photo was still standing.

5. I always meant to get my Master's because I really love school and wanted to continue my education in English, but when I finished up my BA I had no money, a tremendous loan (which I am still paying :P) and my parents couldn't afford to help me. So I searched for a university job for that most wonderful benefit: tuition remission! *g* I honestly wouldn't be in school right now otherwise. It's the single best thing about my job.
