Date: 2008-10-21 09:19 pm (UTC)I always thought that the discrepencies between The Hobbit and LotR could be explained by the differing tones of the stories: clearly TH was written with the children in mind, and obviously Bilbo would not have wished to either frighten the little ones, nor anger their parents. By making the stories less scary, and more comic and entertaining, he was able to do that. Which, if you think of it that way, makes you realize just how *much* darker the story would have been!
