It could be that Geocities wasn't designed for hotlinking. I had a similar problem once. You might be better of going to www.photobucket.com and opening an account. It's free and only takes a couple of minutes.
lil_banik_slave is right. Geocities doesn't allow hotlinking. Photobucket is a good way to go. Paid LJ members can use the LJ photo hosting service. It's still in beta, but I've been using it for a couple months now even though I have a Photobucket account. It works pretty good.
Have you tried using Photobucket? Also, resizing it make smaller might help make it easier to load.
