In a comment to this post of [livejournal.com profile] lbilover I said:

I wish someone with the skill to do so would make a icon of Barack Obama in the coronation scene in RotK, with the word "Estel" on it.

I really would like this very much, the more I think about it. So if anyone on my flist has some Photoshop skills and would do this for me, I will offer you a drabble. (LotR only, please)

That would be one way-cool icon.

In fact, I wrote a comment to someone today and used hope in in referrence to our new president and instantly thought of Estel. Also, while I was listening to Obama's speech at work today, I had this weird thought about Aragorn and whether or not he had to make a speech at his coranation, and if he did, what he might have said.:) I have now totally revealed my nerdiness.

I'm sorry no icon from me but the inauguration really reminded me of the coronation scene. :)

I'll do it. :) Do I get to specify the drabble's theme? But I'll make the icon anyway.

Can you grab it? http://pics.livejournal.com/slender_sail/pic/0005dwp4

I hope you like it. It needed something tongue-in-cheek.

Hobbits will do. I'd like serious, but since they are hobbits, it will be light in the end. Something about both the future and the far past... ?

Actually (and this comes from someone on the other side of the aisle, so be ye warned) "estel" is a really fitting word when it comes to our new President.

He was not so much elected on rational expectation (amdir), but on faith (estel).

I just hope he becomes amdir as well. My estel is placed in the power of the Almighty and in the truth reflected in Story, not in mortal man.

I think that Obama is doing a marvelous job of allowing himself to be used as a symbol; what I'm worried about is whether Obama the man will live up to everyone's expectations of Obama the symbol, if all that Hope and Change will in the end be swallowed up by the crushing maw of Reality.

Obama is already doing a marvelous job of rejuvenating the American spirit, for those whose spirits needed rejuvenating (apparently Hollywood's did, going by that "pledge" video. Mine didn't).

So did FDR, but we had eight more years of Depression under him, and apparently we liked it. And that issued in an age of Consensus Liberalism that didn't really get cracked open till 1980.

As far as uniting people who have been deeply divided... that depends on what he does. Presidential elections are never landslides in America, so he's going to have to do a lot to win people like me over (not sticking my generation with a trillion dollar bailout package [as if the first two bailouts worked] would be a plus for me). On the plus side, he seems to have realized that his party needs him more than he needs his party, which means that if he wants to he can go more center, and he's at least been tempting the Republicans by adding tax cuts to the economic plan, and he's putting off a lot of his ideas for change that would burden the economy.

I kept on promising myself I wouldn't let myself get political in these forms... whoops...

I guess I just mean to say that all the symbol and the style may work for some people, but there are others who need substance more. Show me amdir, and I'll start liking the man more.

Well, you can't say much fairer than that. All politicians, of course, try to make things better for our country (well, except for the ones who merely try to grow their own power/finances, but I don't think our president's one of those); they just differ on the approach. :-)
