Fandom serendipity!

I was invited to a "hen party" by our pastor's wife, at the parsonage tonight. I thought about not going--I was really tired after work, and DWTS results show was on tonight.

But I reminded myself that I am trying to make new friends here in town, and that I could record the show, so I made myself go.

I'm so glad, because I met a new LotR friend! We were doing a little get acquainted game, where each person answered a question. The woman standing next to me answered "Lord of the Rings" to "What is your favorite book?" Well, you can imagine how I latched onto her! She's not familiar with any LotR fanfic, though she *is* familiar with the concept, as she's read some Star Trek fic. She is also a minister, though not Methodist--I believe her denomination is Disciples of Christ.

Anyway, I have her email address, and am going to send her some story links.

Oh we had such a delicious conversation!

Whee! There's nothing more fun than making a new friend in the fandom, especially unexpectedly. I wish you success in corrupting bringing her to at the very least reading fan fiction--from experience I know it's not for all fans.

I don't think I've heard of the Disciples of Christ denomination--is there any particular tradition that they arose from? (i.e. the way that Presbyterianism can be traced back to Calvin, or UCC back to the Separatist Puritans)

Well, I sent her a whole page of links! I hope she likes them.

I have heard it mentioned, I think, somewhere, but I really don't know much about them as a denomination.

Well, LotR brought my husband and me together 33 years ago! I always say that one good way to find a compatible mate is a similar taste in books!
