I've pretty much given up on the Sci Fi, pardon me, Syfy channel. I think they've moved far away from their roots in all the wrong directions and I find myself barely interested in their programming. The name change is just one more thing that makes me want to point and laugh, rather than watch their shows.
*sigh* We usually watch for reruns of old favorites, although the DH likes the new "Warehouse 13" show. (I think it's kind of cute, though fomulaic, as most such shows are.)
Apparently they realized that they could not copyright or trademark the term "sci-fi". Supposedly they can market the new name. HA! (Wikipedia already has an article about it.)
If they wanted to change the name to make it less recognizable to the masses, they should have gone with the old-school term SF. Die-hard geeks would appreciate it, and most other people wouldn't necessarily associate it with science fiction since the term is so much older.
I suppose they wouldn't have been able to copyright that either, though...
It would have made much more sense to keep the name, and just come up with a really cool and unique logo which they could have copyrighted. But I have noticed that the rarefied air at the top of the corporate ladder leads to oxygen deprivation of the brain. Why else would so many top execs make such stupid moves?
While I can understand the whole copyright issue that partially led to the change, and I suppose in order to broaden SciFi to also embrace fantasy, I do NOT like "syfy". I cringed when I read they were changing it. But at least I can watch new eps of Eureka again. ;)
"syfy" is plain idiotic. And a lot of people have found it funny to make syphilis jokes about it! NOT the sort of image a TV channel would like to promote.

Dumb and dumber.
