Happy Birthday Fellowship of the Ring!

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first of three volumes of the epic novel The Lord of the Rings by the English author J. R. R. Tolkien. It takes place in the fictional universe Middle-earth. It was originally published on July 29, 1954 in the United Kingdom. The volume consists of a Prologue "Concerning Hobbits, and other matters" followed by Book I and Book II. From a Letter from JRRT to Rayner Unwin, Sept. 9, 1954:

"I am most puzzled by the remarks on the style. I do not expect, and did not expect, many to be amused by hobbits, or interested in the general story and its modes..."

I'll bet he's looking down on us now in amazed delight, happy that so many have found solace in his epic. He really managed to do something with his life, even if he was surprised by it at the time.

Yes, he did. His impact on the world was amazing. I do think the whole second half of the 20th century would have been different without him.
