Good heavens! I was googling for something else entirely, and among the things the search came up with was this thread on rec.arts.books.tolkien (I'm "aelfwina" by the way) from Feb. 2004, when I had just begun to read fanfic, before I had written any myself.

Brings back a lot of memories...

I like this: "a few mentions of Rosie before RoTK would have been nice. (It would also have been a good bonding moment for Aragorn and Sam; both with a girl waiting at home.)"

Nice plot bunny!

naww...I think I was on rec.arts.books.tolkien back in 1999! Then I went away for a few years and then came back a bit (just lurking, I think) and I think it was through that forum that I was pointed to fan fiction and you guys back in the spring of 2002! :)))

I loved this line:

What is fanfic? Did a google but not sure I found what you are referring
to...

It seems to me to be impossible not to know that and yet I'm certain that lots of folks don't. I didn't know it was on the internet for the longest time but I've known about it under various names since I was about 12 years old.

Sometimes I wish I could go all the way back to when I first found LOTR fiction on line and have the fun of reading it all over again. : )
I miss when it was all new to me and I checked Marigold's Recommendations every single Friday for new hobbit stories! Back when I wasn't writing at all, just enjoying reading things. I miss those days!

I had a Star Trek Fanzine once, just one issue. A girl I met on a vacation who was a couple years older than I was, sent it to me. She was involved in it's printing and I remember being soooo impressed with her. She had been to a Trek convention in NY! That was totally beyond me at that point in time.

I miss finding new stuff on line too and I miss the writers that have moved on to other fandoms or just moved on. Change isn't always good but it always comes.

I haven't seen this thing before. I think I joined the fandom too late for usenet. ff.net and LJ was already up when I started reading in 2002.
