I've no problem with people who simply dislike it as a matter of taste, or who don't really care one way or the other about it. I certainly don't expect everyone to like knitting or doing calligraphy either (two of my other hobbies).

I do have a problem with those who show contempt for those who *do* enjoy fanfiction. If we are "wasting our time", it's nobody's business but our own.

If anything authors should be delighted that their stories inspire others - whatever their level - to write themselves. That's certainly how I would feel if I had published a book.

I am of the "it's rather like free advertising" crowd.

There have been books/stories I've ended up buying because of fanfiction buzz about it. Keeping the stories alive and in people's minds just helps ensure ongoing market for the books/movies/etc, doesn't it?

And I think I'd best just leave my opinion there, lol.

I agree with you completely - again. :-)

Actually, I have a problem with anybody who shows contempt for somebody else's hobby just because they don't like it or understand its appeal. It's the same with fanfiction. Like it, dislike it, or don't care, that's completely up to you and no business of mine - just as my liking it is up to me and no business of yours.

I think some of the problem with authors of commercial fiction is that they have been mislead by their lawyers into thinking of fanfic as a threat to them. They simply don't understand. And other authors are too emotionally invested in their work to "let go" of it.

But just because they don't like/want fanfic of their own stuff doesn't mean they have a right to pass judgement on those who write in other fandoms besides their own, or make sweeping generalizations about why fanfiction writers write it.

As someone who writes original fiction? I can't IMAGINE not wanting people to have fun in my playground. I don't even care if it's something OOC. I just...well, I would be unbelievably flattered and happy that people are being creative because of something I've created.

I know! I think most of us feel that way! But then, we understand the fannish impulse from the inside!
