Meeting hobbity people
Apr. 25th, 2005 09:16 pmI really didn't want to have to go to work today, much as I like my job, I would rather have been off. But I am so glad I did...
The store was having a beading Make-It-Take-It, which is both kind of fun, as I get to sit there and bead but also kind of boring when there are not a lot of interested customers. And on Sunday afternoons, though we usually get crowds because of the 40% coupons, they are almost always in a hurry.
Anyway, I was also supposed to supervise a Boy Scout troop building a rocket model, but they didn't show up. Another associate was helping man the beading table, though, so when a customer came in, looking for help with her little girl's school project, I was available.
She was supposed to be making a diorama of "The Hobbit", which she was reading for a book report. You can imagine how I *jumped* at that, LOL! Turns out they are great fans of the films, and mother and daughter are *both* reading The Hobbit, with plans to start on LotR as soon as they finish! I had so much fun taking them around the store, as we figured out how the little girl was going to do her project. She wanted to do the scene of the giant spiders in Mirkwood.
Instead of putting her diorama in a plain box, we got her a paper mache box that looks like a book.
I had a blast talking to the mom, told her about fanfic, and pointed her to SoA as a family- and kid-friendly archive. Then they came back up, and made bracelets, and we talked about LotR, the movies, the whole time.
I do love my job.

Date: 2005-04-26 01:19 am (UTC)I do love crafting. I'm working on a cigar box purse right now, and I'm going to decoupage a pair of shoes as well.
As soon as coneygoil and I figure it out, I hope to post some pics of some of my stuff.

Date: 2005-04-26 01:26 am (UTC)You should do some crafting if you like it. It's very relaxing, in a different way than writing fics. Now, needlepoint is one kind of stitchery I've not tried, but I've seen some beautiful patterns.
